Blue Lighting

I've been trying to read up on the benefits of blue spectrum lights over other colors, anyone know of a good link or have an expert opinion?

"...His work reinforces the conclusions of other researchers working with basidomycetes: more pinheads are initiated upon exposure to blue and ultra-violet light with distinct peaks at 370, 440, and 460 nanometers.  Badham showed that light stimulation at these wavelengths for as litte as half a milisecond a day caused primorida to form."

Staments, TMC, pg 147.

The blue light spectrum at those wavelengths is effective in primoridia produtcion.  Don't suspect however than a regular blue light is working at those wavelengths.

The actinic blue lights at the aquarium store are at those wavelengths though.

Awesome info guys, seems that the blue LED light I purchased should work wonderfully. Thanks!

I use a fat blue christmas bulb. I'm fairly certain it's output is not withing the 370, 440, 460 nanometer wavelength but it does seem to work better than the white light that I did have in use. I've witnessed a notable change in the number of initial pins since I've been using it. I plan on tossing it out and shelling out some cash for a decent one soon but it works for now.

I shelled out $17 for a blue 24 LED floodlight from superbrightleds.com with a standard bulb base for my grow box. I'll experiment with the light on one batch and a incandescent on the other, see what the difference is.

So what happens if a blacklight were to be used?

Blacklight=ultraviolet radiation=to low wavelength=potency degredation=mutants=sterile mushrooms after a few generations=why DIRECT sunlight is bad and indirect is good.

I like agrosun bulbs cause they have lots of blue but also have the rest of the spectrum. They use more blue light but also need more then just one color of the spectrum.

MH's are also rich in the high end of the spectrum.

YES YES! actinic fluorescent lights from the pet store for aquariums with corals and the such produce mainly in the blue and blue/green spectrum. they're only like 12-25$ depending on which size you get.

I checked on metal halides and they were rather expensive. Most I found had a candle-power output equal to that of a streetlamp. The 39 to 50 watt varieties were all advertised as 'soft white' bulbs and ranged in price from $49 to $79 dollars. Have you got any links to places that sell MH's in the blue spectrum at low wattage for a decent price? If so, I'd be ever so grateful.

I've heard HID lights like MH's arent good for the mushies...to hot usually...RR I'm sure has been able to use it though..I guess if thats the only problem with HID's the heat issue could be easily overcome...PMing him might give you better results though, RR posts on alot of boards in alot of places, he may miss the question.

Right, I just wasnt sure if this was the only issue with HID's...I cant remember why I was told they were bad but this could possibly be it...exhausts can be made though..

Thanks, scat. It's not an important issue really. I just like to keep a log of all suggestions I come across. I wouldn't be shelling out that much cash anytime soon anyways. I may progress in that direction one day that's why I catalogue this type of thing whenever I come across it. Never know what you might need later down the road, y'know.

Thanks Magash. I checked up on those and there's tons of different Agrosun bulbs. There's agrosun gold, agrosun red sodium, agrosun plus, etc. What type do you recommend and at what wattage? And as always, thanks for your time.

Doh, I looked up Argoson instead of Agrosun. Coincidentally there's also a company named Agroson. Oh well, the previous question as to the wattage you prefer still stands.
