Overcoming the LAST grips of anxiety
    #3534495 - 12/23/04 12:53 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Here's my problem:

4 years ago I began having panic attacks which involved the intense fear that there was something wrong with my heart and this would cause it to start beating faster and faster from the fear. I have felt that I was going to die NUMEROUS times because of this.

Today, I have completely overcome panic attacks and the depression caused by it. But one thing remains that I have yet to remedy. I am a tall person, but am also thin for my height. Throughout the day if I am lying down I can feel my heart beating and vibrating my chest.. kinda like it's tryin' to jump out... and obviously with my past experiences this REALLY agitates me! Before my anxiety I can't remember a SINGLE time I could feel my heart beating! Most of the time (like now) I don't feel my heart beat for whatever reason... (I guess it's because my mind is busy with other things).. When I lye down to relax or sleep... it agitates me to the point that I have to finally just get up to keep myself from being PLAUGED by this NUISANCE!

I have trouble getting to sleep all the time because of this. I am desperate for help/advice from anybody that has had similar experiences such as this with anxiety...

Any help is appreciated!

AHA!! Synchronicity! Cosmic Coincidence!
I saw a cardiologist for the first time yesterday because of symptoms like yours. But in addition, I felt slightly dizzy yesterday and a week from yesterday. I had an echo cardiogram some 15 years ago and I have 'mitral valve prolapse,' which is a non-fatal condition, but tends to occur in people with long, slender builds (ectomorphs)!

Listen - the "panic attack" may NOT be a psychological phenomenon but a physiological phenomenon. Even though taking a pill-a-day for 10 years, my blood pressure recently went up from the controlled 120/80 to yesterday's 159/96!!! The cardiologist took me off the Prinivil and put me on a beta-blocker med for the mitral valve condition, which has finally given me symptoms.

DO NOT f**k around with heart irregularities. See a cardiologist. My primary care physician SHOULD have recommended it instead of increasing the dosage of the WRONG medication and adding a diuretic. We have to be our own physicians these days and take care of ourselves. I gave up on my $16 Walgreens blood pressure device (which was off by several systolic and diastolic mm of mercury when compared to my physicians sphygmomanometer), and I purchased a LifeSource (UA-787AC) battery/AC self-inflatable Blood Pressure Monitor for $119. Hey, it's my heart. I researched the net and this was one of the best for the price - much easier than listening with a stethoscope and watching an analog dial carefully. If you don't check your BP occasionally, I'd recommend that you do.

Good Health.

I never went on pills and I've had an echocardiogram before and the doc said everything was a O.K... I also wore a device that would record my rhythms when I felt... "odd" .. and sent those in and they seemed to be fine. I don't have these symptoms all the time they're more on and off. This make's me very nervous to think about actually having a physical problem.

Also, I have "chest pains" and "chest discomfort" sometimes, but I know for a fact this is because I have acid reflux.... maybe I have had an ulcer in my esophagus..

My mom (who is a nurse) took my blood pressure today and it was 120/70 (it was 130/80 at first, but that was because I was wiggin out).

Well it's good to hear that your BP is perfect. GRD (Gastric Reflux Disease) IS serious because it eventuates in esophageal cancer after many years. There are a number of meds for it (I once tried Aciphex, but do not have GRD, some transient gastroenteritis). Sounds like you wore a holster cardiogram. Good that it's not cardiac, but don't ignore the gastric condition.

The same things used to happen to me. When I would lie down, I could feel my heart beating and it would make me uncomfortable. Most other times, I wouldn't notice its beating. I think I noticed it because your torso is stretched more when you lie down. It makes sense that you would be able to feel your heart beating against your ribs/muscle/whatever. That's what we get for being tall and skinny. :smirk: Try working out (to make your torso bigger). Maybe that would give your heart more room or something. I haven't had a problem with that since I started working out and my chest got bigger. I think you can overcome this is you keep reassuring yourself that you are letting it get to you for illogical reasons. So what if you can feel your heart? It's a powerful organ pumping blood throughout your whole body. It makes sense that you would notice what it's doing.

I also used to get chest pains where it felt like my heart was beating really hard and it would hurt. They usually only lasted around 30 seconds and would go away suddenly. I was a little worried about that because I thought that my arteries were clogged or something, but I haven't had those pains in a while. I don't think it's anything to worry about, though. I know lots of people who've told me that they had the same thing happen to them.

Btw, Deviate, I've had the same thing happen to me with pot. I would get super high and then my heart would start beating very fast and hard - to the point of being painful. I kept cool every time that happened, but I felt like I was having a panic/anxiety attack at those times (even though I never get them normally). Luckily, that doesn't happen to me anymore now that my tolerance is up. I don't get high like I used to.

Uh...no. Dude, cardiac irregularities or arrhythmias are not normal. I'm not talking about physical exertion-caused pounding. Working out does not create more 'heart-beat space' which is just silly. Smoking anything is detrimental to cardio-vascular and respiratory functioning.

I just got started on Prevacid a couple weeks ago and my reflux has been reduced some already.

My moms a nurse too and shes the biggest hypochondriact I've ever known. She used to put all sorts of paranoid thoughts into my head.

Sounds to me like your worrying about nothing if the tests are coming back fine.

BTW, I have Wolff Parkinson White (WPW) Syndrome. It results from an additional electrical connection between the atria (upper chambers of the heart) and the ventricles (lower chambers of the heart) and can lead to sudden death. I also get panic attacks too. To top that off I have a rare inherited blood disease called Porphyria which is linked to vampirism/lycanthropy.

I'm something of a medical curiosity!  :smirk:

Does it worry me? Does it fuck!

I dunno if it helps, but your heart can beat at 200 bpm for a few days and you would not die. Also, you can get pain in your chest from having a panic attack/anxiety but it will be transient and it can be differentiated from a heart attack in that with the latter, the pain will be crushing and prolonged.

I don't understand how a doctor can figure something like that out.

Huh? Whats that supposed to mean?

The guy that diagnosed that I have Wolff Parkinson White syndrome is one of the leading cardiologists (heart specialists) in the country.

My acute intermittent porphyria was detected by the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Immunology.

Like hobbitcg said, my heart would start beating very fast and hard to the point of pain too from weed. After giving up the stuff this stopped. I've spoken to friends and they experience this sometimes from weed as well.

Try giving up for a while and see if the problem goes away.

I didn't mean to sound like I was doubting you; I was just thinking how strange it is that you can figure out what electronically is going on in your body... just kinda mind boggling in a way... you know?

I think alot of my problems can come from caffeine consumption. I haven't thought of this until lately; caffeine is something I have nearly every day. It's time for me to lay off for a while and see what  improvement I find.

Also, I barely ever smoke and would be THOROUGHLY freaked out by my heart doing that during a smoking session.

Sorry for talking out of my ass. I probably shouldn't make baseless assumptions when giving people advice about their serious problems.

Working out has made my chest more comfortable, though. Muscle is cushiony.
