Is it necessary to remove even small pins before dunking?
    #3460920 - 12/07/04 05:41 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

my cakes are going to be pretty dry after this first flush and so I'm going to dunk them for about 18 hrs. but there are still lots of really small pins (maybe a 1/4" long) on the cakes. I'm afraid that if I just leave them, they'll end up aborting because the cakes are too dry, but if I pick them will I still get a good 2nd flush??

If you decide to dunk your cakes you should definately clear them of any pins. If you leave them on you stand a chance of them getting waterlogged and then rotting and turning into an awful mush on your cake.

Dude, you have a MASSIVE pinset going with those cakes. If you're worried about the over-all hydration of the cakes, I suggest placing them directly onto the perlite layer for 1-3 days. The mycelium will wick up water from the perlite and re-hydrate itself. Be careful not to leave it on the perlite too long as it will start to get soggy. Good luck!

Oops missed that part.

You can't dunk with those pins on. Once the cap turns brown you shouldnt submerge the pins. White primordia is fine. However its my opinion that thats all the first flush and none of those ave aborted yet and you should pick off shrooms as they mature but let those all go. When the flush is over everything will stop growing and then you can pick it all. Keep it moist and roll it in verm. I'd also put some extra verm on top.
