verm casing layer prevents further flushes
    #3444182 - 12/03/04 11:11 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

My mycobag flushed wonderfully the first time (see grow log for pics). After harvesting, I dunked the bag over night then put a light casing layer of verm on the cake just enough to make a uniform layer covering the cake.

The bag has been exposed to direct sunlight for 5 days now and I can see no sign of any pins under the verm when I move the verm around. Is this due to the verm layer preventing light from getting to the cake, so it isnt pinning again? First time around I left the bag in the light and 3 days later had pins all over.

Whats up? Should I remove the verm from the bag, and just leave what verm is stuck to the cake making a speckly appearance? or take part in the number 1 rule of patience?

not sure about that, but i scratched the top of two casings a few months ago and it hosed both of them, they got all contaminated and everything, so i'd be careful if you do scrape all the new verm off

just give it a little longer, thats the reason why we put our casings back in the incubation chamber till the mycelium is about to brake through the top casing layer, but with just a layer of verm around it, it should be fine, people use that method with cakes all the time, you dont need a thick verm layer for just a roll. Im not sure wether you just rolled the cake in the verm or wether you actually cased it, though. if just rolled then wait it out itll fruit, and if you cased it then incubate it till you see patches coming through and then patch them with casing mix to give the slower mycelium a chance to catch up and then put it into the fruiting chamber.

never mind, my dumb ass just read it again and you stated that its still a cake and not been cased, yeah take some of the verm out, on a cake the main reason for adding a verm layer is just to retain moisture becuase theres no casing layer to do that and cake dry up quick after the first flush, but you just need a thin layer all around of moist verm and then put it in the fruiting chamber.
