I found a lone specimen of the type of mushrooms I posted last week, in another area far removed from the place I found the first specimens.
Habitat description: growing from the underside of a decomposing hardwood limb deep in the forest, in central North Carolina.
This mushroom possesses a separable gelatinous pellicle, but again, I could not obtain a sporeprint. I tried to take a print using black and white paper, but nothing turned up.

Heres what you do to find out what this thing is. Get some half pints or baby food jars either will work, and make a thick paste out of brown rice flour and water(exact ratios don't matter) and fill each jar will about 1/4" of this paste. Now sterilize in a pressure cooker, or use a pot of boiling water on the stove top. The stove top will work fine for paste, it sterilizes easy. Now let them cool to room temp. Take a piece of stem and pieces of cap, and start dropping chunks into eack jar. That one mushroom should do about 4-5. Now when you do this, do it quickly in your clean kitchen, or better yet in a card board box sprayed with lysol, no need for arm hole, just work quickly throuh an opened end of the box.

Now wait for a culture to start and send it to workman, or someone else who has the time and talent to try and fruit this culture. We need to find out what this mushroom is, and since its not dropping spores, this is the only way to culture it.

Sounds like a good plan, Lizard King.
This is a small, fragile mushie as you can tell from the pics.It actually has a fairly long stem and the cap is a little larger than a nickel. It looks similiar to a pelliculosa(which are not reported from N.C.). I've only found this species three times.Twice this year and 3 specimens around 3 or 4 years ago. One of the specimens I found years ago blued from the base of the stem all the way through the cap.I recovered no sporeprint then, either.

It is probably some sort of blue footed mycena. The growth on wood, pale gills and small thin aspect are consistant with that type of mushroom. Stamets comments on blue-footed mycenas on pages 57-58 in his book "Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World". Curiously, he also talks about John Allen aka Mjshroomer injesting this type of mycena with favorable results. It is hard to tell from the picture but if it is a mycena, the spores would be white.

I have found a similarly blue footed mycena that grows this time of year in coastal Oregon. Unfortunately, I have been unable to germinate spores or get a clone to grow on agar. The specimens I found smell of radishes when crushed.

Hi Workman,

Are you familar withthe Garlic smelling mycena?

Just curious. I was not aware of a radis one.

And the species Mycena cyanorhiza is a small one to two and a half inch high mushrooms which I picked and consumed specimens of.It has a blue bulbous base, similar to the blue bulbous base of the tiny mushroom Conocybe cyanopus, which by the way grow along the river off of the I-5 exit to N. Santiam road to Salem, Those fungi were only like one and a half inches high to two and a half inches high. That was the size of the small bluing mycena's which I found only a couple of times in twenty-five years, and only from the Pacific Northwest. One time I found several specimens from a lawn and the other from under a conifer tree.

I raeally do not think that the one noted above by doo is a bluing mycena. And it seems alful tall for a mycena and the whole stem would not blue on the bluing mycenas which are LBM's. I think Doo's shroom is more of a dark blackening coloration not caused by bluing as such.

Hello Workman and Mj,
I do not think this is a mycena. I took a sporeprint using the universal sporechart (half white, half black paper) and nothing showed up. I've done this with 3 different specimens.Twice this year and once around 3 years ago. Same results-no print. I think this species probably has spores, but only produces very miniscule amounts.I'm going to try to get access to a microscope to see if anything shows up.
I've only found these mushrooms 3 times in 4 years for a total of 6 mushrooms. I've checked these areas every day for the last 4 years since I found the first mushroom, with these results. This is what leads me to believe, it produces some spores, just very small amounts.
They definitely blue at the base as you can see from these pics(I posted these earlier about 2 weeks ago). The first pic is a little blurry, but you can see the blue. The second photo is the same mushroom after it has dried. The color is more greenish.
Until I get a print, I guess it could be anything.

Hmmm, maybe its a new type of bluing conocybe. I dunno, without a spore color its hard to pin down. Lots of tiny shrooms. The bluing is intriguing though. I have had success extracting spores from dried gill tissue in the past. If you want you could send me the specimen for a culture extraction and spore photography.

They're yours, Workman. I have 2 dried caps and 3 stems. I think I still have your address. They'll be sent out within the next couple of days. Even if they aren't active, I'd still like to know what they are.
