Ok, so I've been seeing alot of people say "Jiffy Mix" some stuff you can get at wall mart is pre-mixed 50/50, and works good for casing soil. Is this true? Do you get it in the garden department, sterilize it, and use it as casing layers? THIS WOULD BE GREAT!

I found this web sight--> http://www.jiffyproducts.com/indexpage.c...y1=Jiffy-Mix%AE <--Jiffy Mix web sight. It says: #901 Jiffy-Mix Jiffy-Mix is an optimum blend of pure Canadian sphagnum peat and vermiculite for seedling gemination, cutting propagation and transplants. pH: 5.5-6.2 Dry Bulk Density: 8-10lbs/cu.ft Jiffy-Mix Plus: #911 Jiffy-Mix Plus Jiffy-Mix Plus contains the same fine ingredients as Jiffy-Mix and adds the "growing-on" power of Mag-Amp?, a non burning 7-40-6 slow release fertilizer. Jiffy-Mix Plus is ideal for vegetable transplants and larger, premium quality bedding plant products. It delivers a nutrient boost both on your bench and then in customers garden or field. pH: 5.5-6.2 Dry Bulk Density: 8-10lbs/cu.ft. So if some of the experts can tell me if this Jiffy Mix stuff (unmodified) can be used as a casing layer. I know 5.5 - 6.2 is semi-acidic, well not to bad. Its not neutral, but its not that acidic.

Yeah its good stuff. Throw in a little crushed oyster shell or something to get that pH up a lil and you've got it made.

Crushed oyster shell raises the pH? How much of it do i add if so? I thought you were supposed to use calcium carbonate or a liming agent of some sort to raise the pH...

ehh I could be completely wrong but, oyster shell is packed full of calcium carbonate...I believe...which is a mineral salt..and is found concentrated as/in limestone. I'm sure i'm wrong bout some/all of this, but..hope it helps none-the-less. ~D

Are you sure they still have verm right now? Most companies (not stores that sell it, the companies that give it to the stores) stop selling it for the winter..most places cant even special order it for you during the winter just because they cant get it themselves.

No, i'm not positive but it would be worth checking if you have one nearby. I did buy some verm. at home depot about 2-3 weeks ago though. I had to ask for it but it was there with a bunch of other left over garden supplies from the season.

I dont have one of that name but I can assure you I've checked 5 garden centers, two feed stores and three landscape companies. All unable to help me.
I have never heard of Home Depot carrying verm..I have heard over 3 dozen people incuding myself from the board who have checked for it there and said they have never found it and the website doesnt have it. Are you sure you aren't talking about Perilite (which they do carry)?

I too think home depot doesn't carry it. Your individual one might be different. Home depot only carries Scott's brand (which I think they own) for things like perlite, peat moss, cactus soil, rye grass seed, and many others. I haven't seen a verm product of theirs.

Check local nurseries. They always have verm, cause their greenhouses are always in full swing.

No, I assure you its verm.. It's sta-green brand. Maybe its just the individual home depot like elgr said. Best of luck to you though on your quest for verm..

If you have any hydroponic stores around you I suggest checking them for vermiculite. IME, it is there all year round.

i guess not all supplier stop stocking it because at the 4 growing stores in my general area, 4 of 4 had it stocked. this does exclude places like lowes and wals mart. these are indoor growing and argiculture stores. didn't have to ask about speacial ordering since they had it in stock.
