What to do with cakes that no more give fruits
    #336840 - 06/07/01 07:01 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

Some of my cakes already gave their 3rd or 4th flush and seem to have finished fruiting. Are they still usable? For inoculation - I think yes. For casing? Whithout nutrients - perhaps not - the casing itself doesn't provide nutrients, does it?. But maybe someone has some ideas to share. What about to make some natural casing - to dig a hole in the ground, put something under and something over the crumbled cakes, cover with some plastic material to keep it moist and let be. Maybe after some time...

Wishing you good yields and trips.

I wonder if it would help to mist the cakes/casing with diluted honey water or Miracle Gro solution... anyone tried this? Just my newbie two cents.

fungus can grow in honey water but it is the wrong thing to use to provide nutrients to your cake. miracle grow is for plants

dunk it in skim/rice/soy milk for 12 hours and see a new flush in a few days.
or, grind them into powder and use it to spawn straw/compost.

Exactly! Crumble and use to spawn new nutrient substrate, as long as you dont have any contams you could keep spawning your culture on and on.....:)

I've had some success with crumbling the cake and placing the crumbled pieces in an outdoor compost hole.
