Adding water to PF jars
    #3348082 - 11/11/04 05:53 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I have still got some stalled growth in a couple of PF jars. The inside of the jars are looking particularly dry, which leads me to believe that they need moisture to colonize more.

I was thinking of adding a bit of water to them. Would it be ok to boil some regular tap water. Suck the hot water into a syringe a couple of time to sterilize it. Cover the water, allow it to cool, then use the syringe to inject water into the jars?

I know this has been done, but is it pretty safe to do it? Any procedure or protocol I should follow that I didn't mention here?

Thanks in advance! =)

it's not very save, its difficult to add the correct amount and you run more
risk of contamination, particularly bacterial. if you have tape over the holes
remove it and pop them into the incubator, you may also want to try turning them
upside down since co2 is heavier than air it will evacuate from the jars

I have turned them upside down...they have been stalled for several days now and I have tried a few different things. Adding water is a last resort, but I am feeling that they need more moisture. The substrate looks really dry in the inoculated spaces.

it's best to be patient, there is far more that you can do thats harmful
than helpful in this situation...

I hate delivering the bad news... but in honesty its all that can be done.
patience is a major player in this hobby, I've had jars and bags that
have taken more than 4 months to colonize...

I've done it.. I boiled water for 10 minutes, drew it into the syringe and spit it out into the sink a few times, filled it one final time and stuck the needle cap on, and let it cool.. then I injected 6cc into my dry 1-pint jar.

It worked well.

I wiped the top of the jar(tyvek) down with alcohol prior to injecting.
