Info Needed Where do I find Black Trumpets
    #3339862 - 11/10/04 01:27 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I Gone out Mushroom picking a 4 times in the last two weeks, and I've been finding tons of chantralles and hedgehogs, but very few trumpets, I've been told different things from different people but... they didn't know what they were talking about, so, please, any help would be very nice,

What type of trees do they prefer, or do they,

High elevation or low,

and any thing else you know, thanks again.

Since you are finding chanterelles now, I doubt that you are in the same region as me. But, since you are finding chanterelles, there is a good chance that you will also find black trumpets. I found many many many black trumpets in NJ on a small hill (40ish feet- yes, that's a hill in NJ) with sandy soil under small scrubby pine trees, and also near oaks and mountain laurels. Interestingly, there were also golden chanterelles and hedgehogs at the same spot, so you're probably not far. They are sort of hard to spot, but once you find one, there will probably be many more.

I've heard that beeches are good too, but, while there are beeches in my hunting spot, most of the black trumpets and chanterelles were in needle compost under scrubby pines.
