Three PMP Questions
    #3338535 - 11/09/04 06:14 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

1) Are there cheap alternatives to the Geolite? Something that could be found at Home Depot?

2) How often do you have to open the lid to let fresh air in?

3) How do you add new water? Just pour it in over the substrate away from the cakes?

2) Never if your air pumps are adequate

3) Just pour some new water in. Not rocket science.

So just the two air hoses going in will do it?
You don't have to have one pumping air back out?

And what besides lava rocks? I'll be on foot and the shops are a pretty decent walk.

yes only 2 hoses going in. Put a hole or 2 in the lid to let some air out. (it's in the original thread) You can use perlite which you may get at nursery stores or hardware stores maybe.

Care to elaborate?

As for perlite, I'd say it is less than desirable, but it will work if it's all you have.

I've found that it compacts down and doesen't let much if any air flow through my bubblewands, so I still have to fan.

I'm going to move to geolite ASAP.

a bag of geolite costs 11 bucks.. a bigass bag 25 bucks.. a bag of perlite is 5.. perlite is a nasty mess though, i bought some just to compare to geolite and it gets everywhere and doesn't provide anythign close to a stable growing surface with water

now let me get this straight, the geolite/perlite is to keep your work out of the water right? I don't understand how the temp is kept optimum. At first, just because im crazier than a fart taster, I thought the geolite was sometype of heat source.(geolite, lava rocks, come on, i thought heat)

I think I have a fairly good list of things you can use as "rocks" Stuff like leca is just a variation.

Geolite(expensive)
Hydroton(can be hard to find)
Perlite(messy)
coral pieces(can be expensive)
Lava Rocks
broken porcelin(only some works)
I also have this lightly puffed up cement chunks. It's very light and porous. It holds RH fairly well.. So, my guess is there is lot of alternatives if anyone care to try them.

There was some debate over holes in the lid. But my belief is simiple. In the fluid system, 3 volume dilution in reservoir is considered 1 full volume exchange. So considering you have an air pump that's 2-3 time the tub volume(it'll be 3-4 because of the volume taken up geolite), you get a complete flush every hour. For casing, I personally don't feel too good about the microclimates and help with occasional fanning with or without those holes.

Original question about water.. there is no substrate in any part of PMP when you build it. You should run the PMP setup for at least a day prior to putting cakes or casing in there to ensure that the RH holds. Pouring water in is easy without cakes/casing in there.

For me, 1.5" of water takes a long time... I mist after each peek and so far, I've only had to make up water once. That equates to about once a month.

Good luck

Sam

One more question (before the next one)

How about temp control in the PMP? I'm thinking either put the tank heater below the geolite between the two air hoses. Good idea or bad?

Good idea.

I'm so stoked. I won't be able to start getting everything set up for about a month, but I'm doing lots of research and preparing in the mean time. You guys rock.
