Jars being warm to the touch are bad for myc. growth?
    #3318117 - 11/04/04 12:12 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I just read in a post entitled "incubator questions" on http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3316916/an/0/page/1 that if the jars in your incubator are warm to the touch it will kill the myc. The bottoms of my friends jars are warm to the touch in his tub and tub setup - however when the thermometer is in one of the jars the temp. is 86. Is this going to cause problems? My Friend thought that temp. was optimal - but after reading that he was wondering if a damper should be placed between the tub and the jars?

They'll be fine. If you're worried about it maybe you could find some sort of a small rack to put in your tub to sit the jars on. I think magash puts a small water pump in the bottom of his t-n-t's to prevent hot spots on the bottom of the 2nd tub.

I think there is very few, if any, use any dampers. didn't I just answer your question earlier?

whether or not your jars are warm to the touch will depend (assuming your jars are at 86F)  on how warm your "touch" is.

if your body is 98.6, wouldn't the temperature of something have to be higher than that for us to feel it as "warm"?

depends on ambient temperature. If its winter and your house is set at 70F, then touching 86F jars will feel very warm. This is normal.

hmmm... this is turning into a conversation about "what is considered warm to the touch" - that sucks.... But whatever.

Hey my buddy doesn't have zip ties like Magash's t&t but it does only sit on top of the water. I was wondering how Magash refills his water? cutting the zip ties? Or does the 10 or so gallons in there just no evaporate very much?

Mine have felt warm to the touch for about a week now and the myc growth has really taken off. It's relative really, like was said. I have a thermometer that touches the bottom and a sticker thermometer for the air temp. Bottom usually reads around 85'ish, sticker usually reads around 80.

what sucks is that you don't have a thermometer in you incubator(or just don't know how to read one) and i have to waist my time(and kramer's!) explaining that what is warm to the touch is irrelevant to temperature as any one could deduce that if you sit your ass out in 0F temps with the wind blowing at 40 mph for 2 hrs and then walk into a 34F room and touch a 55F jar it will feel rather warm to the touch when 55F is actually considered "cool"
:peace:
