Why the fuck did California vote down the "Three Strikes" initiative?
    #3313314 - 11/03/04 08:28 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

According to CNN it would have:

Amended California's "Three Strikes" law to require increased sentences only when current conviction is for a specified violent or serious crime; redefines violent or serious felonies; only previous convictions for violent or serious felonies, brought and tried separately, would qualify for second and third "strike" sentence increases; increased penalties for specific sex crimes involving children.

What the fuck is wrong with that?

Why did they vote that down?

Frankly, I'm stunned.

I've heard that in the past the third strike was something petty - like misdemeanor theft. Then the judge would often be forced to sentence him for 20 years.

Why take judicial discretion away from judges? Just pick better judges.

did they? I hadnt heard yet.

Thats unfortunate.

Fear tactics man. The media CONTOLS the simple minded Americans. The media gave the impression that we'd have killers walking the streets. Also, I think the terminator was against that one. So when he sent out a voting giude to everyone, everyone may have voted to what he said.

We had a cow shit load of props. this time so I doubt people really digested the factual analysis of both sides of each. Good times, sad times.

California's pretty heavily Democratic if I'm not mistaken. Maybe California's Dems think the three strikes rules is good for them or something. But it's more likely that every single Republican in California (all two thousand four hundred of them) voted to keep three strikes and only some of California's Dems followed suit.

What was the percentage? Worse than 60-40%?

57-43%

I don't see what Democrat/Republican has to do with it.

Thats what Democrats want. To have as many people in government institutions as possible. Cuz they don't believe in freedom. Why else did they come up with the socialist education system? To get impressionable kids into government institutions. Thats why.

Well, Republicans think families should raise children!

The meaning I took from the original post here is that it is still there. And that this measure would of made it apply to way less people. But it failed.
