Filter discs are the best thing ever. They allow air exchange and make it much much easier to get the lids on and off your jars.

These things rock, colonization time is noticebly different, i won't ever use normal lids again.... Well worth it for the impatient cultivator, which I think is everyone......

they work awesome. 2 jars were left in the open facing all sorts of dirty conditions and had no problems with contamination or drying out. thanks nushroom..peace

After fighting a significant contamination problem for the last year (from Bacilis), my friend's rye is suddenly contamination-free after using these discs on his jars. Highly recommended.

why couldnt some one just go to wallmart/ home depo and get a hepa type furance filter and cut them up?

The trick when using filter discs is to not have TOO MUCH air exchange. You want to have maybe a 1" diameter hole exposed in the middle. If you let the whole jar lid be filter disc, your substrate will dry out too rapidly. I take a jar lid and drill about 10 1/4" holes scattered around the top and carefully deburr the holes, then put that on top of the filter disc. Another alternative is to use plastic canning jar lids and drill a big hole in the middle. Or, you can put foil over the tops of the jars to help control evaporation.
