Possible death caps in my cyan bed

Been watching these grow the last few days.
and i'm thinking they could well be death caps.
Growing under a maple tree, in wood chip mulch (part of my cyan bed lol)
Any ideas on what I should be checking to find out if they are what they seem? I'm letting them grow on a bit, so no spore print yet, just looking for a few ideas of what I should pay closer attention too, for a solid ID.
Any help would be cool, thanks in advance

Looks like a death cap except that shape of the cap. It is more conic then on the pics I have seen on the net ...

The lack of a ring makes me suspect that they are from section Volvaceae, not Phalloideae where the Death Caps are from. Try checking several young specimens to see if there's a partial veil (the tissue that becomes a ring as the mushroom matures).
You should also get a spore print. There is also a reasonable chance that they are Volvariellas, which have a pinkish spore print.
Happy mushrooming!

well, theres certainly no ring present on any of the 4, all in different stages of growth, and the most open one now has a pink tint to its gills. so i'll pickand print that tomorrow.
its really looking like Volvariella speciosa, which would be great as its growing in my kitchen garden lol.
Thanks ToxicMan, i'l certainly look more into it tomorrow and get some better pictures, as I just checked it out by tourch light.

All Amanita species are mycorrhizal, meaning that they have a mutualistic relationship with the trees they grow with. Volvariella species are saprophytes that mostly grow from wood. So if they're growing from compost they should be Volvariellas. Volvariella is a small genus, so identification to species should be relatively easy. Of course, the pink spore print will instantly and decisively show which genus they are.

Though the gills have a pink tint, the spore print is more of a terracotta, or salmon colour, is that within the correct range? Certainly has an orange tint to it.

Well if the spore print is what you said it is, it certaintly aint a death cap. I'm pretty sure all Amanitas have white spore prints.

Yep, very true, its certainly something else, looks a lot like Volvariella speciosa, though is salmon, or teracota, classed as pink ?
I know some call salmon, salmon pink, but this is certainly closer to orange than pink in my eyes.

i dont know much about Volvariella
if i read up on it, maybe id think differently, but it looks like an amanita to me.
that unversal veil.. with the base like a sack makes me think that. those are 2 very classic things for identifying amanitas.
though ya. the spore print throws me off.

The salmon spore print, wood chip habitat, slimy cap, along with the volva and lack of a ring, indicate Volvariella speciosa.
There are contrary reports about it's edibility/toxicity so it should not be eaten.
Cool find.

Cheers, I'm sure you are right Though my book called it a choice edible lol, so i ate one yesterday.
I'll have to give some thought to eating the rest of the patch now though

A salmon color for the spore print is the correct one. A salmon color is put into the general pink spore print category.
I'm not aware of any edibility problems with Volvariella speciosa. If you eaten one from that patch without problems then you should be OK for eating the others. Be careful that they are the same kinds - there have been poisonings where a second species grew in a patch of mushrooms.
