Stretching cost of grain substrate
    #3303658 - 11/01/04 04:02 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

I really like the rye i purchased from MycoSupply. however shipping this stuff can get expensive. I like the white millet i saw at Agway. My idea is to mix the 2 grains and end up with a great substrate at a cheaper cost. i tried this before with 1 quart jar. it worked great! the millet alone seemed too compact to spread as fast as rye or the mix. just thought i'd share my idea.

Millet does not hold as much moisture as Rye, which is why most people who do just casings do Rye/Popcorn.

Millet however is great for spawning.

You can get Rye at local health food stores. Just ask around and even if they have it or not, they can order it in bulk. Nice thing is, you dont have to pay shipping. I ordered a 50 lb bag for 23 bucks.

Yep, nice and cheap at a health food shop. They ordered in 25kg for me and it only cost about $20.

You like putting your hands through the millet? Theres no millet in rye. Any rye berries should be sufficent, as long as you can tell its the same stuff, there is no realy quality difference AFAIK.
