sterilization question
    #328931 - 05/29/01 04:20 PM (22 years, 9 months ago)

just a few quick q's about sterilization so i can get ack into the full swing of this hobby:

what is the best way to sterlize used syringes?
could i fill a rinsed babyjar up with dist H2O, put the lid on, THEN boil it (like while it is half full) let it cool and use that water to make spore solution? (inside the jar w/ a print)
are syringes straight out of the packet sterile enough to use for making spore syringes?

thanks for your help!

Here's how I do it ; Dismantle the syringes, place in a saucepan, bring to a full boil, reduce heat to simmer. With lid on simmer for 1/2 hour. Let cool. With gloved hands, remove and reassemble syringes. Bring pot to boil once more, draw up boiling water into syringes, replace cap. Return syringes to pot and simmer for another 1/2 hour.
Straight out of the packet? Yes, they're sterile.

I wouldn't tighten the cap on the baby jar too much or it could explode when it is heated. It should be slightly loose while sterilizing then tightened down immediatly upon turning off the heat.
