Almost successful
    #3285355 - 10/27/04 04:15 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Well after the long wait for colonizing cakes I have birthed and almost pinned and now my cakes are all contaminated!!

I had to transfer my cakes to different bins twice for a number of reasons I believe this is how they got contams.

Does this sound right to anyone?

Do I need to fan if I have an air pump on my perlite bins??

If I do fan how do I sanitize the area before I fan.

Can the contams be from fanning?

BTW the contams looked like a green foamy stuff growing. :mad2:

Please help
Thanks - 0dd

I don't like handling cakes too much after they are in the PMP. By the way, I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

To increase the sterility issue, try the following.

1. install air line filter(that film canister idea from Hyphae is very good, but try using tyvek instead of polyfill) and don't fan.
2. recharge the water in the pod with H2O2 every few days.
3. Mist daily with water/H2O2 solution.
4. sterilize verm and water before use.
5. If you need to handle cakes, wear sterile gloves(if you don't any, use ziplock bags inside out.

I know these seem a little extreme, but they should help with sterility since you had bad luck with it.

You'll also need to clean everything in and attached to your pod, including air lines) before you continue. I know... i lot of work... Sorry I can't be anymore help.

Good Luck.

Thanks Sam, don't worry it doesn't seem to extreme.
My pump is fully encased in a box filled with polyfill. The opening is covered with a coffee filter and the rest of the box has been taped down completely. Is this ok?? Both the pump and my bin are sitting in the bottom of my martha.
How would you recommend transfering the cakes to the bin after the dunk/roll?

Thanks again,

-Odd

I just do it right in fron of the pod. I put a piece of thich foil in the pod, put some verm on there and wet it. I wear sterile gloves and drain the water from the jar into a bucket(worry about the splashes afterwards), drop the cake upside down onto verm, and keep repeating until all the jars are in the pod. I actually never touch the cakes at any point.

Then I change gloves and put some more verm(fine/medium grade) on top(1/2"), pat it down lightly, and repeat with all the cakes. Then I give all of them a good misting(very very good misting) with 1/10 H2O2 water solution. Never actually touch any part of the cake...

Hope that gives you a good picture...

Good luck.

try casings. after u get them in the casing, if u use straight verm theyre reallllly contam resistant. i constantly blew on mine with my lungs, and even had one fill up with rainwater by accident. i cant seem to get a contam, no matter how hard i try.

Why are you trying to contaminate your casings? If you want them contaminated, just throw a moldy bread on it.

I think this is a bad thing to say to someone who's just had a case of contamination. False reassuraces can lead to more compromised grows. Are you gonna pay for his failure if he uses verm and get contaminated? Nothing is comtam proof. Don't make it sound like it.

It's funny you mention it. I have two straight verm casings incubating right now. I started then as an experiment. I hope there ok.

Oh yeah Sam do you think my pump is covered good enough to NOT use a filter in the line??

I should be okay.  But I'd suggest you get a in line filter soon.  I'm sure that pump bouncing around in that box gets annoying.
And I'd also recharge that water in the pod with H2O2 from time to time.

It kinda seems like it would be better in the room because it would remove more contams and dust ect...

I mist cakes before during and after pinning.  Just be careful not to overdo it.  Don't let water droplets sit there for long.  I have to fan a lot and often after I overmist it.  Also, just as a precaution, I go easier on H2O2 during and after pinning.  I have 2 spray bottles... 1 with 1/10 H2O2 and the other 1/20 H2O2.

But that's just how I do it. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy when i take extra step.

Hey whatever I an do to kill contams.

The other cakes that were in the PMP when I noticed the contams are ok. I sprayed the entire bin with straight H202 do you think that will stop them from catching the contams??

"contams are ok" is not a good thing, my friend.

no no, seriously, you never know about contam..  it's hard to get rid of once you get it.  I think that's why they call it a long battle...  Only time will tell.

Good luck
