casing problems :(
    #327598 - 05/28/01 02:23 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

i saw this casing that was placed inside a terrarium at about 90% humidity. the cakes were cased with verm/peat mix (mostly peat, verm running low). the temps were quite low (about 65F)

a few flushes came and went, all small, and now it is refusing to flush. ambient room temps have been increased to encourage more fruiting, only now a sort of fuzz can be seen. is this likely to be not so rhizo myc, or mould?

thanks for your help!

is the fuzz white or greyish?

BTW..sounds like those low temps were the main problem with the crappy flushes..

The peat increases contamination chances- just use the plain verm casing method. Low on Verm? Get more. You need it to make BRF cakes, you need it to case. It's good to have.
Place a heating pad under your terrarium, and a thermometer inside of it. Shoot for 75 degrees to grow happy little babies. Ambient warming will not do it. You really have to make all the conditions just right for them...

I have yet to use an artificial heating source after birth...room temperatures between 70-75 work just fine for me..

the fuzz is an OFF white. not grey, but not angel hite either. could be the peat darkening it? it is definitely more fuzzy than rhizo tho.

i have always used peat, usually get about 4-5 flushes before trichoderma sets in.

i tried plain verm originally... just WOULD NOT pin/flush no matter what i did! :) i wanna try it again tho coz verm has no nutritional value therefore less chance of contamination...

oh and i got room temps up with heater, temp inside terrarium is 74-75 with 93% humidity... sound fine?

Your temperature and humidity are right on the mark.

I've had off-white surface growth before, but usually within a few days it reinforced itself and became more snowy white.

How thick is your casing layer?

increasing the temp is not what you want to do to encourage fruiting, this has the opposite effect, you want to lower the temp slightly. Also what flush are you on and how long has it been since the last flush

Dude, are you saying that he should maintain sub-65 degree temps.? No way...70-75F is just right.

60-65F would be fine for cold shocking, but when you cold shock you don't maintain that temperature throughout the fruiting cycle...
