humidity/temp/casings

I have afoaf with a PMP with perlite. His hygrometer only measures RH up to 90%, after that it displays "hi" He knows its not at 100 because the walls are not that wet. Will this make a big difference in his yield? He has 1 casing in there right now cased with 50/50+. He is waiting on his caliber 2 to arrive. Also his temperature is at 79 and cannot be lowered. Any big differences going to happen? thanks

humidity at 90% should be perfect for casings as they need less RH. They provide a lot of their own from the casing itself. Temperature is a bit high, but should not be harmful though it may take a bit longer to pin. If you want to bring the temp down, a humidifier does wonders, plus it gives a constant air exchange. After the addition of a cool mist and an ultrasonic my temp droped 5 degrees. This may be a little more than you want to spend now... $20/$50 respectively, but helps a lot. plus no more fanning
goodluck and wait for other advice from more exp. people beejay

I have the same stupid temp/hygrometer. However, I just birthed cakes into a perlite tank w/o airstones. It says HI but there is no condensation on the sides of the tank and I'm wondering if i should go buy a mister and spray it. I thought that perlite made almost %100 humidity though? It's been set up and running for 36 hrs, ~6 hrs with 2 cakes inside. I have 2.5" of perlite and about 3/4" of water. Should I mist or will it be alright?

condensation is a big misconception. You get condensation from difference in temperature. Warmer air can hold more water vapors, so 99%RH humidity at 75F will have more water vapors than 99%RH at 70F.(remember it's RELATIVE humidity) At 99% humidity, temperature is almost at dew point. If the outside temperature is lower than the temperature inside, you'll drop the temperature of everything that's in contact with outside air below dew point causing water vapors to condense. If you are in a room with same temperature as inside your terrarium, you won't see condensation. Remember though, if you have an air pump, it's going to be slightly warmer inside, so you should see tiny itty bit of condensation on your rubbermaid.
Good luck!

you should still mist with cakes because you want 99% humidity. I however am using casings I need around 90% humidity. I believe I solved my own problem at the pet store. I bought one of those 10 inch long air rock tube things, a device that turns one airline into two. it also has open close valves on it to regulate the amount of air going to each device. I put the air tube on top of perlite, the other is below it. Now my hygrometer displays 87% after some adjusting. Perfect!

sam, I am going to call you misguided in the simple fact that I want to learn more and this is how i do it and understand things. Most of what you said is true, but I think you're missing a point. Isn't it true that relative humidity is relative to the temperature? Isn't it also true that RH will change depending on temperature, because RH increases proportionally with temperature. As I know it, if an air at 15 degrees can hold X amount of moisture(x being the most possible in the air) and warmer air at 25 degrees C. can hold more moisture, but x is still the most possible amount of moisture in the air, then it is true to say that warmer air can hold more moisture, but humidity may also be at 99%. I went off a bit, but the main thing i was aiming at is relative means exactly that, and colder air with 99% is still 99% relative humidity because it is relative to just that.

You can have 100% RH at 90F. and you can have 100% RH at 45F. for what it's worth. Another thing is you can have condensation at 30-40% RH so it is most definitely a temp differential influence (condensation). RH Dew Point

Yep, Derx. We are saying the same thing. If you want to know the technical side of it, warmer air holds more energy vs space, and thus have more energy to overcome the weak bond of water molecules, keeping them in small enough chains to it suspended in the air/water mixture. But, that aside, we are saying the same thing. Maybe I wasn't explaining it simple enough.

i know exactly how it works all i was trying to say is that a lower temperature can still have a high RH to that temperatore. Higher temperature has more water molecules in the air because of what you just stated. I just misread your first statement and thought you were trying to say something about lower temperature not being capable of having high humidity.
