Why else? That question is limitless when thinking about tripping just a few, music, art, introspective perception, literature, philosophy, enlightenment........
-------------------- Host: I've heard whispers about the financial support your government receives from the drug industry. Peruvian: Well, the irony of this, of course, is that this money, which is in the billions, is coming from your country. You see, you are the major purchaser of our national product, which is of course cocaine. Host: On one hand, you're saying the United States government is spending millions of dollars to eliminate the flow of drugs onto our streets. At the same time, we are doing business with the very same goverment that is flooding our streets with cocaine. Peruvian: Mmm-hmm, si, si. Let me show you a few other characters that are involved in this tragic comedy.

The human mind, being an odd creature, seeks amusement and gratification. Certain brains can achieve this gratification through altering the manner in which it percieves the universe. After all, it is trapped in this body. It's a nice body, but, like monogamy, the same ol' same ol' nature of our perceptions can be a bit dull. By altering the chemical happenstance of itself, the brain can experience new worlds and fullfil its primitive need for exploration. And all without the usual restrictions of our physical hosts.
*** deltron, your avatar both amuses and distracts this particular brain. It approves ***

Tripping, if you're open-minded about it, can bring about some very positive changes. It allows a person to see themselves through a magnifying glass and see past their egoic self and get a glimpse of their true nature. If used constructively, this can be a powerful tool for self-improvement.

one trips when and because one misses the resonance that living through expanded reality affords. when stoned mind moments stack up together and we exist in a much richer zone of vibrations, sensations, thoughts and memories. one gets to press against the limits of self and understanding in the unfamiliar home that emerges. it is very therapeutic.

I find it helps to clear my head and show me what is important in my life. It has brought about some minute and some large changes in my life, appearance, and way I percieve (sp?) the reality of it all. Sometimes I feel the the human mind is capable of SO MUCH more than what we all got now, like there may be feelings and emotions that none of us have evolved to yet..
forget that...
Why? for enlightenment (sp?)

Firstly, I'm something of a mystic... not any particular denomination, but still something of a mystic.
I trip for spiritual reasons. Every trip will teach me something - every trip contains a message. No matter WHY I thought I went into the trip, WHAT I am tripping on, WHO I trip with, WHEN I do it, etc - there will be a lesson imparted to me. My task is to recognize and assimilate this message, whether I find it on the comedown or two months later reflecting on the trip, I will get at least *one* message, one pointer, one insight - if not many. About what? About things as great as the universe, reality, or society or things as small as whether or not I should still be in this relationship...... Messages, that's what tripping is about.
Also, I trip to play with the borders of this thing we call reality. Excersize and feed my mind. I (and hey, maybe I'm just drugged out and insane) firmly believe I have witnessed and taken part in real magical acts whilst tripping, from simply enhancing empathy and mild telepathy (I believe most people can agree with me at least on this much, assuming they have tripped with people of like minds) to things like spirit walking (seeing and travelling outside the body) and myriad other things.
The third and final part of it for me is variety. I choose to experience my life in as many different states of mind as I can, because I find being locked in one state of mind is a bit boring for my mind - altering my state of mind excersizes my mind, forces me to deal with different states of perception, and takes a loop back into the first two parts.
So, take those three things and make them one..... I tried to be objective and disconnect the pieces, but I didn't say quite what I really wanted say, nor did I convey quite what I wanted to convey - mostly because it is difficult to convey such things past the looking glass to those who have never bothered to step through...

I trip for a lot of the reasons already listed, but aside from personal insights, working out problems etc; I find that the experience is one of the best ways to dissolve boundaries and psychic barriers that have built up through the months from stress and inter-personal contact. Also I find that I feel closer to the earth and our ancestors who have preceded us and tap into knowledge of one's self and the world that you can not gain by yourself.
This is just from Mushrooms; not to speak of Ayahuasca.
