HPS Lights (urgent: need help)

I'm interesting in buying a 400-watt HPS light to grow some exotic plants
Now, when I went to my local hydroponics shop, they said the bulb itself was about $65, but I needed other equipment such as the ballast and adaptor. The total price of all of these things comes to around $300.. do I need the ballast? (the ballast is like $200)
Do I need to pay $300 for a grow system? Can I go cheaper yet just as efficient?

Well yeah I figured I needed a ballast, but I was wondering if there are cheaper ones and if any ballast is worth paying $200

I really dont like insidesun at all. Mike runs a really sloppy bussiness. And the inside sun brands and econo's are pieces of crap. This is from personal experiences 2 times.

I have not found a spot I would call the holy grail yet. But Discount Hydroponics is good. 1 order from them so far and I was happy. Price was a tad bit high though. Packaged with nothing but DH on the lable. Insidesun wrote 400 watt on the outside of the box last time...that sucked. 1000bulbs is also good I hear. Thats where I plan on using next time.
I have decided that these things are expensive enough and its really important for my ease of mind to get quality equipment that I am not going to be cheap anymore. I am always worried about fire. But I smoke too much weed wich makes me paranoid.

If you havent already gotten your light then I have a 400 watt hps hydrofarm sunburst system that I only used for one grow before I decided to upgrade to a 1000 watt system. I was going to put it up on ebay but if you are interested PM me. I only want $150 for it.

Try:
http://www.ahlgrows.com/
They are located nearby me and I bought some supplies from them, and they also offer some used stuff.
Good quality, honest, they don't try to sell you what you don't need.

www.propertyroom.com has great top quality ballast for so cheap. eBay or craigslist also has ballasts. Never pay more then $100 a ballast unless it is some new digital model or brand new top of the line ballast. You can buy top of the line ballasts from electrical stores and wire it yourself if you have a brain that can read.
You need a ballast, a box to house the ballast, if you assemble the ballast yourself some wires and a socket, a bulb, a hood and then it is complete.

while this would work it does have the possibility of causing a fire.
if you can try to get all your stuff from the same place so you can take it back if it doesn't work or something happens. yeah i love m,y digital ballast so quiet cost me 300 bucks got my enhanced HPS bulb and hood for 100. try to get a horizontal hood because they deliver more light since the light only had to bounce a short distance from eh arc tube to the reflective surface and then to your plants rather then to the arc tube and like 10 or 12 inches to the hood then around the hood and down.

Yes you need a ballest, socket and reflector. 300 is a rip off imo but most hydro shops charge that.
You could either buck up, buy some florecents, or Go to an electrical supply store and get a raw ballest and wire it yourself. I dont realy sudjest that unless you know what your doing.

NO NO NO NO!!!!!!! WIRING A BALLAST A THIRD GRADER COULD DO. IT IS EASY IF YOU CAN READ AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. MAKE SURE YOU DO THE 4 SIMPLE STEPS.
GROUND THE BALLAST BOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GROUND THE LAMP SOCKET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT IS ALL YOU NEED TODO BESIDES CORRECTLY WIRE THE TRANSFORMER TO NOT ELECTRICUTE YOUR SELF.
NO HARM EXISTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL NOT HURT YOURSELF IF YOU PROPERLY GROUND AND WIRE THE BALLAST. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS AND DON'T BE STUPID>
