putting mp3s on nextel for ring tones

It all depends on what phone you have, if you have one of the older models like i60, i90 you can only use midi ringtones. If you have a newer phone like i730 you can use wav ringtones you could just convert the mp3 to wav and use it. I think only the newest camera phone plays actual mp3 ringtones though. Do a search for MyJAL, this is the software you will need and you need a data cable of course.
