will lids melt?
    #3231516 - 10/07/04 11:56 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

nabbed some quart sized jars from the lab I work at the other day. They have plastic lids and I was wondering if yall think theyll melt in the pc. I suspect that they would be autoclavable being theyre from my lab, but Im not sure cause I didnt order these in particular and dont feel like going through the Fissure catalog to try and find em. I think Ill try a run with no substrate in one, and wrap the cap in crap loads of foil so if it melts I can just chunk it.

just wanted to see if anyone has used jars with plastic lids at all, I did see em for sale at mycosupply

You can simulate similar temperature by putting 1 lid in a large tupperware with water and microwaving it. Microwave creates pockets of steam hotter than water at boiling point.

the plastic lids you can buy that say they are not meant for being pressure cooked or steamed will not melt but they do get somewhat soft...the key is to not tighten them very much after being pc'ed...I get mine just tight enough that the lid dosen't move around when shakin...then I losen it slightly after being set down to cool...just so its not grippin but not enough so its been opened and exposed the substrate to air...this way when they cool they make a tight seal that can be opened without using hot water when you want to use it

btw I think the only reason they say that not to use for pcing or steaming is cause if you don't have holes so it would probably cause the jars to explode or something...since in this hobby your gonna have polyfil or a hole with tyvek or whatever you use and a hole for innoculating you don't have to worry about pressure building
