I can't get any of the two, are there other alternatives?

Verm.

Verm is used to hold in moisture in a time release, to give it to the cake when it needs it.

Perlite is used for to airiate things, and give a wicking action.

Two totally different uses.

But thats not what hes asking here citric.
Mrjim, In my opinion it wouldn't hurt your cakes to put it on as the protective layer.

How so? If the pearlite soaks up some water it would still stay close to the cake it self. I think that if you just put a real thin layer on top you'll do just fine. Like curious said it may dry out a little bit of the top o the cake. But i think you would have success in using it.

I would have to agree with hawksapprentice, it's just your contam barrier, and it's not going to suck the water out of your cake.

also take into mind that vermiculite holds more water than perlite does. perlite makes drainage in soil easier, and the reason we use it in the bottom of a terrarium is due to it's pourous surface, which allows water to evaporate off of the perlite faster.

i don't think the perlite will suck/wick water from the substrate, but it will dry out faster itself. perlite usually comes in smaller pieces for the same "grade" of material, so as a contaminant barrier, it would work better since the smaller pieces will fit closer together, at least IMO.
