did John Kerry really say that we need to be giving Iran nuclear materials? I was really, really stoned and my trip was kicking in, someone tell me I hallucinated.

Kerry was only for supplying the materials necessary for peaceful nuclear works, like power stations. It makes sense in terms of keeping tabs on their nuclear capacity, and the materials required for a nuclear weapon are different from those required for a nuclear generator. But yeah, that doesn't seem like it's necessarily the best idea ever...

I think we should help them reconfigure their nuclear program. Preferably with daisy cutters.

There's no question Iran wants nukes. The problem is, they're not cooperating with inspectors. The idea is to provide them with technology and fuel (none of the technology and information given would have to do with bomb making). It creates a test. They would be required to send all spent fuel rods back to the countries they came from. The IAEA would catalog the spent fuel to make sure none of it was kept by Iran to form a weapon. The amount of spent fuel needed to create a functional bomb is massive, and I'm assuming the transactions would be done in a way that eliminate the chance of Iran keeping enough at any given time. If they keep any of the spent fuel, then they've failed the test and will be harshly sanctioned.
Now, is this a good idea? I don't think so. I could give a fuck less about Iran. And I don't think being provided with fuel from us would deter them from getting their hands on functional nuclear weapons by some other method. It just seems like a way for them to look good and divert the IAEA's attention.
But it's not a terrible idea either. An identical or similar program is being used with many other countries and has been successful. And I think a lot of people are being very irresponsible in saying that the plan is to essentially provide Iran with nukes.

No, Kerry was for supplying them with nuclear fuel -- LEU (Low Enriched Uranium). There are two ways to obtain bomb-grade material from LEU. One is to separate it out directly from the LEU using various techniques such as gas centrifuges (yielding HEU), the other is to run it through a nuclear reactor first, then separate out the plutonium. Separating plutonium from the spent fuel rods is substantially easier than producing High Enriched Uranium, but in either case the necessary starting point is LEU. Both uranium-based and plutonium-based fission bombs work quite well.
Anyone who believes Iran is building a nuclear plant to generate electricity rather than to obtain material for nuclear weapons is too dumb to be allowed to vote.

Will someone, somewhere explain to me why Iran, sitting on one of the world's great oil reserves, has any need for an alternate source of energy. Anyone? Anywhere? Hello, is there anybody out there?

The USA just sold some laser-guided bunker busters to Israel for a few hundred million. I'm thinking that after Gee Dub gets re-elected, Israel will turn Irans nuclear program into a smoldering crater.

The Iranians are Greens. The color of Islam is green, after all. And we all know Greens are in favor of nuke plants. Oh... wait a minute...
