Problem: Contamination during late incubation
    #3195954 - 09/29/04 02:11 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

9 PF BRF/Verm jars lost to an unidentified green mold late into the incubation. Jar appeared healthy until just prior to fruiting. After disection of the cakes the green mold didn't appear to penetrate much, if at all. Cakes are already disposed of.

Can anyone offer insight into what vectors may have contributed to my mishap. As my most successful attempt I just want to improve my protocol until I get it right. One questionable step I took was inverting the jars every couple of days to exchange air. Also, I think cross contamination occured when jar were put back in the incubator in different spots.

Thanks all

This assumption may be correct but there might be more explanations. Inverting the jars is a good idea to accelerate growth at final stages, but as the concept "air exchanges" implies air getting out and air getting in, some hidden contamination could get transferred from one jar to another.

Chances of contamination increase if you are too curious and keep checking the jars many times. Contamination might get inside the incubator, if the incubator itself is not kept in a clean place or if you are not clean enough (cloths, hands, hair, etc).

Thanks, I've done alot of cleaning and I have my fingers crossed for future success.

How frequently should the jars be monitored for growth and contamination? Once a week?
