Rye vs. WBS
    #3182128 - 09/26/04 10:00 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

1. What is the better substrate?
2. Are there any pros and cons to either?

Some dude is looking to do about 7 Qt jars and wants no contamination, and potency.

wild bird seed is easier to find, generally a little cheaper
and provides more innoculation points as a spawn.

neither of those grains will guarantee 'no contamination'.

I've heard people like Rye better for not spawning and WBS better for spawning. Generally speaking. I havn't worked with WBS but I can say its easier to find then Rye. Rye's 29 bucks for a 50 pound bag around here..dont know fi thats more then WBS or not though.. Rye is good to work with and thats what I like.

What type of store do you look for the Rye in?
Being in Kentucky I  bet I could find it here somewhere! :mushroom2:

I love rye but have used WBS because of it's availability. I prefer rye flushes over WBS flushes as the rye seems to always be fuller IME. As far as spawn rye and popcorn work the best and break up very uniformly where as WBS tends to clump more when broken up IME.

Rye can be found in health food stores with the other oats and grains. Sold as Rye Berries. I've heard they sell it in feed stores too but if so, not around here.

Rye holds almost double the water that WBS can hold, so naturally it will flush better, and more times. But WBS is better to spawn with due to it not sticking together as much, and being smaller bits. Rye in my area, is 8.50 per 25 lbs. WBS however is 9.50 for 50lbs at petco. So It depends on what you want to do with it. If your going to do straw, or straw and dung, do WBS, if your gonna just case a grain, go RYE. Both can contam equaly IMO.

I have had different experiences with rye/wbs rye separates very nicely for me whereas wbs needs more coaxing I've noticed this mainly when doing g2g but that may be just my experience? I like them both for sure!

I am a rye fan myself but wbs has worked very well also. One thing I have noticed is that rye seems to be easier forr people to get the hang of when they are new to grains.

wbs kicks ass as far as spawn...

rye kicks ass too! ...
it is great spawn for poo..
kramer only spawns poo with grains or fruits the cakes in the pmp...
just not worth the time to case the strait grain...
blah...blah...blah...  :sun: :rasta: :tongue2:
they both kick ass!
:crazy2:two tested tried and true substrates to play with besides brf   :heart:em' both

I use wbs and it has tended to stick and clump together and when I try to shake them it seems to not want to seperate out side of that it has innoculated well and spawned quickly when shaken 4 me!
No rye experiments for me yet so Im 1 sided!
