mushroom fruit from sock like structure
    #317860 - 05/15/01 11:51 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

i remember flipping through the paul stamets text in barnes and noble and seeing large hanging sock like structures that were filled with colonized substrate and begining to fruit. what were these? could this method be adapted to cubensis type mushrooms?
i'll try to get ahold of the book and read for myself, but in the mean time any comments would be appreciated

These "large hanging sock like structures" are plastic sleeves filled with innoculated paseurised straw or similar substrate. The plastic is punctured and the mushrooms grow through these holes. P.ostreatus is grown this way.

Not really.. You'd get pinning everywhere, not just through the holes you made. Shrooms would be trapped under the plastic.

what if it were made out of a membrane that is loosely woven that could be penetrated by the fruiting bodies, like nylon stockings that are stretched out by filling them with substrate?

why do the previously mentioned mushrooms only fruit where there are holes cut in the plastic?
thanks,
gray1

Because they fruit where the CO2 levels are smaller and that?s where the holes are.

last i remember P cubs fruit towards wheres theres light... you could put the substrate in a DARK plastic bag where no light shows through except where the holes are... i see no problem why that wouldnt work. Now its just whos willing to try something that crazy.

what iffff... you got yourself a bunch of pasturized straw mix with some colonized substrate and fill fishnet-stockings with them then place the stockings in a plastic bag and wait for it all to colonize... then fruit by hanging it up in a terrarium! ... worth a try ! hehehhehe
