Child Protection Act

H.R. 4547, sponsored by U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) would provide radical new mandatory minimums for a variety of nonviolent drug offenses. "This bill would effectively impose a five year mandatory minimum for anyone distributing any amount of a controlled substance in an urban area -- even medical marijuana dispensaries supported by local authorities," said Steve Fox, director of government relations for the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, D.C. "A 21-year-old who sells a few joints to his 17-year-old brother would face a mandatory ten years in federal prison for the first offense. Such cruel penalties will help nobody."

I'm pretty sure that's already been suggested. For dealing at least. I don't think any congressman has gone that far for just possession.

I'm fairly cetain that they try to charge dealers with murder if one of their "clients" dies by OD. In fact I think someone we know ran into this problem

ROGERSVILLE (AP) -- A Hawkins County judge has sentenced a teen to eight years in prison for selling psychedelic mushrooms.
Eighteen-year-old Michael Lee Long of Unicoi pleaded guilty to lesser charges of possession and intent to deliver.
Long will be eligible for parole after serving a third of his sentence.
Assistant District Attorney Doug Godbee says psychedelic drug arrests are unusual in Hawkins County.
But Godbee says the sentence imposed Monday should caution potential dealers that punishment is stiff.

No that's not dlag's real name, so that can't be him. He didn't get into trouble for selling mushrooms, either.

I always like how they title these things, "Child Protection Act." After all, the children are our future, and if nailing our hands down, cutting off our feet, and ripping out our tongues, saves one child, then it's obviously worth it... I can see the next bill already... (HR 666) Mary's Law : Anyone found, or suspected of smoking marijuana, will have a scarlet letter "M" carved into their chest with a rusty nail. They shall then be tied to a large wooden post outside of the town limits, where they will be shunned and ignored, until their flesh is ripped apart by wild beasts. The remaining sinner's bones are to be broken by large stones, burned, and the ashes scattered to the four winds. You can take the country out of the puritan, but you can't take the puritan out of the country... Edit: Fixed typo. "Beats" is now "beasts." The ghosts of Kerouac and Ginsberg will no longer molest the flesh of the sinners...

Nope. Drug prohibition was never as bad as this in the past.
