Bleached jars, still sick sweet smell
    #3141559 - 09/15/04 10:40 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I had a few jars that had some Bacillus, er, wet patch in 'em.  Tossed the stuff, set the jars in a hot water/bleach/dish soap bath for an hour or so (10% bleach).  Dried them out, now, they're in a cabinet in a grocery bag.  Just opened the cabinet, and it reeks like that same bacterial sweetish sick smell.  Please advise on how the fuck to get rid of the bacteria and smell.  Do I need a stronger bleach solution?  I've washed these fuckers already with soap, after the bleachy bath.  Hrrmmm.  :mad2:
    Thanks!

Maybe you should just boil the jars? That way, you can not only get the sticky material, but lift up the rest of the residue as well. Oh... and how clean is the area where you keep this stuff? You arent leaving these things wet are you? There are a lot of factors to consider here... Nevertheless... boil them... turn off heat... put some dish detergent in... let it sit... rinse and repeat if necessary, if it doesnt get clean the first time than you got some bigger problems on your hands  .

Use mycobags. For a minimal investment
that will pay for itself with one project,
you can make your own bags with a
Foodsaver unit ~

Colonized Foodsaver Bags

If you still want to stay with jars, I would just toss the
ones you have and start new. A case of pint jars is
cheap and the amount of work you have to put into
cleaning the jars must be worth more than the seven or
eight bucks it takes to buy new ones!

Besides, why risk the same contams again? Have you
isolated your contamination source? Was it the grain,
your sterilization procedures, faulty PC? Good luck with
your mycological endeavors!

Namaste,

Peaceful Nomad

Weeeell, today I took the jars and dumped a tablespoon of hydrated lime into each, then a 2 tablespoons of hydrated lime into a large pot, filled with water, boiled for a little over an hour.
I'm pretty sure anything that was alive on them is now dead.  And they don't smell.

Another theory is, did you make sure you got the lids too?? I know that contams like to get embedded into the rubber ring that goes around the jar lid.
