casing with whole cakes...
    #313040 - 05/09/01 10:40 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

AF saw some pictures a while back where someone just put 2 whole cakes straight into a butter pot and then double end cased them. Will this work and might it be quicker than having to break up all the mycelium and allowing it to recover?

Also AF is interested in knowing what happens to the mycleium once cased - does it just grow through the top layer of vermiculite and soil? And how thick should this layer on each end be?

Yes, you can place whole cakes in a casing, but you still need to break up one or two so you can fill the gaps. It's not that much faster than crumbling. An even substrate layer is important. I usually do 1" of vermiculite on bottom and 1/4" of vermiculite on top. The mycelium comes through the top layer and lightly colonizes it. After 50% colonized or so, you can initiate pinning.

That sounds good. One question though: Why do the gaps have to be filled? Surely they will grow anyway, although the cakes will have vermiculite on their surrounding sides as well but won't this be okay?

Honestly longbong, I think it would work fine, I see no reason why it wouldn't... try it, lay down a 1 to 2 inch layer of 'your choice', then place maybe 4 cakes or however many you feel comfortable risking side by side, then fill in the gaps with your 'casing' then case it. I would put the 'verm' side of the cakes facing down though. You will definately get shrooms, and this reduces your odds of contams. This would most certainly be a good newbie tek for casing. Please tell/show us how it works out if you decide to try it.

if you cut the cakes in half.....you are exposing the *uncolonized* center of the cake.....(more succeptible to contams).....i never cut the cakes.....
when you crumble in the gaps....that connects the cakes forming a *network*...i think...(correct me if i am wrong anybody)
i lay 1" on top & 1" on the bottom, works perfect...

You might want to scratch the surface up a little before casing. It'll grow through quicker and more evenly.

You shoud make sure your casing layer pins before growing all the way through. Once you start seeing it come through evenly, take the steps to bring it out of veg growth and into pin formation/fruit growth.

It should look like this:

Why does the mycelium grow further "stretching" away from the cake - is it to seek out more food source?

Um.. curiosity maybe? There's an intelligence at work here. Those may act as sensors for the network or they may just happen as a result of high-humidity. Could be lots of reasons.

The short answer.. I don't know.

the reason mycelium looks "flat" at first is that your colonizing a cake inside of a closed container...it's kinda like growing a watermelon in a plastic mold and when it's grown mature it's the shape of that plastic mold... now when you take your mycelium cake out, the mycelium is free to grow where ever it wants... the best example of this is putting cakes in a high humidity terarrium (above 97%): the cakes get all fuzzy and poofy.. it's because the mycelum thinks that there is more stuff to grow thru because of the super amount of humidity(which is about the same amount inside of a cake probably)... now when you case ... you throw down a moist layer of your choice of casing... the atmosphere inbetween the layers and at the points where the layers meet is optimum for mycelium to grow thru... now since there's no nutrition in this layer, and the mycelium have grown thru it, and above this layer the humidity is a couple of %'s lower, something called knotting happens and pins begin to form... and the rest is history... peace and good luck
