Surprise oysters

Well, I hope these are oyster mushrooms. My dad noticed them while cutting the grass. They were growing off of the base of a dead elm tree in our yard.

So, are these what I hope they are?

They sure look like Oysters to me. A spore print should turn out white or pale lilac.

Happy mushrooming!

Great!

Now, how should they be kept until consumption? Would keeping them in the fridge be enough?

Also, would soaking them in salt water (to rid them of bugs) alter the taste in an unfavorable way?

awsome find.

i would personally (carefully) take all the nicer and cleaner beefier oysters and cut them up right away and fry them up fresh with oil and butter and onions, then pour a mixed up eggs on them and make a cheese omlet.

and dry the rest and then try cleaning them up more once dried, and them once dried store them in a glass jar for later.

im big on mushroom and cheese omlets.
had one today actually./

If you only need to keep them fresh for a day or two, then treat them exactly as you would fresh mushrooms from the grocery. Put them in a paper bag in the refrigerator.

Of course, as GG says, fresh from the field mushrooms are hard to beat.

Happy mushrooming!

I followed GGreatone's advice ad made an omelete, those mushrooms are damn good cooked that way. I definitely know why they're called oyster mushrooms.

If I keep that dead tree around, will they continue to grow out of the same spot?

Yes. If you water it they will often continue fruiting.

Happy mushrooming!
