filter disk on the side of a hawk tank?
    #310298 - 05/06/01 02:16 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

should my friends brothers twin sisters, whos uncle is my girlfriends stepfather, drill holes on the sides of a Hawk tank for better gas exit? (he already has holes drilled on the lid of the tank) would these new holes help this... heavy-shitty-stupid useless gas which disturbs his lovely shroomies escape easier? And if yes, then what should the diameter of these holes be ,so that humidity wouldnt walk out of the tank also? (does humidity escape through filter disks????)

i have pretty much the same project as you +big extras that i dont want to reveal just yet,
(when i perfect it, i will post pix...)
well, since my terrarium is in use presently, i have noticed
alot of shit that has gone not accordingly to plans...
for 1:
the computer fan i have (3"x3") obviously need to be filtered so no foriegn organisms can invade my precious goods,
what i have found is that the fan isnt powerful enough to suck air out through something as thin as a coffee filter...
and when i take the coffee filter off, the big gaping hole releases all the humidity. is the "micron magic" filters thinner or less resistant than a coffee filter?

2: where did you research the whole, "The fan will be on a timer, 4 times a day for 15 or 20 minutes."

3: is your setup air tight (besides the holes that have been drilled)?

Veeery interesting...hmmm very very interesting...
Question: How come people claim that computer fans work great for glove-boxes?If this is true...then you dont need to filter the fan-gaps all the time, but only when the fan is not in use....after that , all the fan can be covered with some kind of lid from the outer side of the grow chamber. The only thing to figure out is...how the fan-lid can become automated...but first of all....someone must affirm us if the fan(and how) it works in a glove box!! GloveboxfanworkClaimers! Affirm!!!

I was looking at *the picture thinking that your fan should blow, not suck, since that container appears less than airtight.

And I was also thinking that the low pressures produced by those types of fans could still be effective if they are drawing air through a fiber filled p-trap which has a cross-section 2-3 (or more) times larger than the cross-section of the fan duct. Filter resistance could be minimal, but the air flow through the trap would be slow, so as to let heavy airborne contams settle on the filter material or on the floor of the trap.

like the bottles at the brewers shop although there is no fan or filter in their traps.

Take it easy. And if it's easy, take it twice!

Then that's cool, I'm not being hostile. My containers aren't, but they look similar, so that's a consideration I think about.

And the trap thing is just an idea to maybe incorporate something like the bulk electrostatic stuff available locally, instead of having to order special stuff online. Although I have to admit that those micron magic filters sound great, and the price more than reasonable.

Take it easy. And if it's easy, take it twice!

Heres an idea:
- recently i decided to 'borrow' a few hundred filter disks from my school. These filter disks have a very fine fiberous mesh which i believe would stop contaminates but still allow for gas exchange. Now heres the idea - i live in the UK and have heard of people using vacuums to get rid of the CO2, if i did exactly the same as the above pic, except use a 'Dyson vacuum' instead of a PC fan would this work?

I'm not sure if you US folks have Dyson's, but they r v.powerful and have Hepa Filters built in. wonderful invention.

so, should i try this?

Do you recommend a HEPA filter on the side of the container?

If you put the blower on the exhaust (neg pressure), you'd **better** have an air-tight setup.

Positive pressure is the way to go. But it requires a real blower, not a little pc fan.

Wouldnt a air pump placed in the grow chamber ,be usefull for carrying all the Co2 out???(via tubing of course)

filter the cool mist airflow,
connect to hepa, or use filter over intake.

So at last......can a air pump supply fresh air (running on a timer) and a small filter disked hole(or 2) remove Co2 effectively??? Can we automate so easily a grow chamber?
Could the filtere disked holes let humidity escape?Would they/it have to be half the size of the air-pump tubbing in size?? I know experimenting is the only way to be shure....but a holes in your terrarium without reason are no cool.
