if you had to pick one hike, what would be the best?
    #3071296 - 08/30/04 09:31 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Anywhere that you have actually been to.  Trail or bushwack, what is your absolute favorite?

my hidden agenda is to plan some trips next year

so BEST hike YOU have been on?  maybe add distance as well if possible.

My favorite place to hike is in hawaii. It's called Kualoa Ranch, mjshroomer has it on his website. Lots of cop. cyans. just laying around, right by the beach, its a huge valley. Also where they filmed Jurassic Park. All told I'd say its about 3 or 4 miles deep.

The Pacific Crest Trail. Anywhere from about Mt. Whitney area up to around Yosemite. I love high country backpacking.

a guy i work with just did a weeklong stretch of the pacific crest trail, his pictures looked great!

while i have enjoyed hiking in the northeast, i would recommend the west for sure!

the hike i just went on was nice, any of the trails in the mt. challenger areas seem in good condition and at many varying lengths depending on which route you want to take.

and mt. rainier is awesome...extremely hard but amazing

The best place I've ever hiked was on The Big Island of Hawaii (can't give specifics) where we picked 11 different types of wild foods in one day; ginger, lemons, guavas, chile peppers, passion fruit, bananas, mangoes, avocadoes, and I can't remember what else- and we ended up at a gorgeous green lake on top of a volcano with a rope dangling over the lake. We all got naked and swung on the rope like Tarzans and Janes and flung ourselves, screaming, into the water.

Then there was a raft on that lake that we all paddled around on a bit, taking turns jumping off and kicking in the water to push the others around. We went across the lake to the avocado trees, which the men proceeded to climb, yes, still naked, and they threw them down to us in the lake....we waited for them to bob to the surface to gather them. They were big blackish green ones with alligator skin. They made some mighty fine guacamole when we mixed them with the lemons, chile peppers and ginger we foraged for the same day.

Then I got to swim all around the lake all by myself, playing naked mermaid. The waters are said by the Hawaiians to be sacred, and healing, and I truly truly felt that. I was able to be free and full of joy swimming back and forth and around and around in that beautiful lake on top of a volcano.

I think that was the best hike of my life. Sorry I can't tell you exactly where it is, but it was only about 5 miles round trip.

that does sound very beautiful though. its definately best you dont tell people where it is, cause it does sound like a very blessed place that doesnt need to be tainted.

lucky you :sun:

You take your clothes off and swim around, spending most of the time underwater- using dolphin kick. You can also do a regular freestyle kick once in awhile. You need to be sure to do a flip once in awhile, and some twirling; horizontal. You come up for air and dive down again, like a mermaid, deep. you can go slow or fast. I prefer mostly fast. Does that help?

ALright, since you're in BC... I would go to Olympic national forest (but you've probably already been there)... that place seriously kicks ass. Check the out Deer Park area as it is pretty isolated and you really get deep into a highland rainforest.

1. shi shi beach on the extreme NW corner of the olympic pennusula. trail head either from the north or south. from the south is longer but cooler. learn how to read a tidal chart 1st as you have to cross some areas at low tide

2. grand canyon rim to grand rapids via hermit trail. very cool, I recommend loading your pack with weight a doing more than a few practice hikes to get in shape 1st. also go in late winter or early spring to avoid heat and people. we went in feb for 5 days and only saw a handful of people. it was t shirt weather at the bottom and snow at the top. take some kind of traction device such as crampons for icy areas near the top.

3. pecos baldy lake, NM. the trail gets alot of use but the scenery is awesome. and if you walk up to the saddle between the mountains once you get to the lake there are bighorn sheep usually hanging out and quite calm with people.

Deep in the redwood forests of Central California. Around the santa cruz area.

Lush, fern covered forests with 3 foot long banana slugs and other such oddities.
