seems you found a bolete! i notice some reticulation on the stem. what region of the country are you in? what was it growing on? what does the stem stain? and what about the tubes? (the spongy stuff where most mushrooms have gills)
just learning about boletes myself and would love to try and ID this one!
if you're going to get a new ID book, may I recommend "Mushrooms Demystified" by David Arora. Been a most indespensible guide!

I ate very good boletes that bruised blue and they were not poisonous. Bruising is not a sign of poisonous shrooms, so don't give false information unless you are 100% sure ...

I think these boletes are "Boletus bicolor." This particular bolete bruises blue, and yet it is described as being edible.
The only boletes that I know of (in my area) to be poisonous are "Boletus subvelutipes." This bolete has orange-red pores and the flesh stains a blue-black.
The boletes in your pictures have yellow pores, and so I do no think that they could be the poisonous "Boletus subvelutipes" variety.

Psilygirl is asking many of the important questions we need answers to for an ID on these.
Where did you find them (state)? What kind of trees were nearby? If you don't specific tree types, at least let us know if they were evergreens or deciduous. Cut one in half, wait awhile, and see if the flesh inside changes color. Let us know what color it is (whether it changes or not) and what color it changes to (if it changes). Scratch the tubes with your fingernail and see if they change color (your photos suggest they will change to a reddish brown). Is the cap surface slimy or sticky? If it has dried out, try wetting a fingertip with a drop of water and rubbing the surface to check.
Happy mushrooming!

Those mushrooms look like some good edibles , but you gotta talk to Taxic man for confirmation. I don't have my shroom guide, but I would just eat them anyways. The only poisonous variety of Bollettes I know of bruise blue and also, Bollettes are he least likely poisonous species. Still, don't risk it till you get a confirmed ID. They look really good though. My mouth is waterring!

These three rules are good for beginners to use when finding edible boletes:
1) Avoid blue bruising mushrooms. 2) Avoid red pored mushrooms. 3) Do not eat the bitter ones.
You may eliminate a few edible species; however, you will eliminate all poisonous species.

A solid in-depth field guide. 45$ at Borders, and well worth it.

The Smithsonian has a pretty good field guide out as well, with great color photos, but lacking in imformation and content.

They are cool looking shrooms. I usually find a couple whenever I go for a bike ride the day after a rain fall. They are always fun too look at.

To those who were saying it's fine to eat blue bruising Boletes:
1) Don't say this to a newbie 2) Is the risk of getting very sick worth eating a few mushrooms? 3) It's always safer to just not eat the blue bruising ones because it's incredibly hard to give a correct ID of Boletes via internet. 4) I doubt the Shroomery wants to be held responsible for somebody getting extremely sick.
Sorry about this, but this kind of stuff asks for trouble.
