Media Bias

I don't think I've seen anyone here deny that the media is biased. Whether it's slanted to the left or right seems to be an area of disagreement, but we all seem to agree that it is, in fact, biased. Now, my question is this: So what? Do you believe that bias in itself is a bad thing? Do you believe that unbiased reporting is possible? Would you feel better if the media stated their bias so that people would know where they are coming from? What, if anything, would you like to see done about media bias?

I don't think all media is biased. The BBC seems to me to do a very good job of providing news without bias. It's easy really - just report the facts, followed perhaps by "these guys say:", and "these other guys say:".

It isn't a matter of simply reporting the facts.... they do that already. Do they publish all of the facts, or just the ones that highlight the point they are trying to make. The wording used to report the facts also has a lot to do with it. I can make mushrooms sound harmless, or the scurge of the world, using the same facts, simply by changing the tone and inflection of my wording.

Take off the rose colored glasses and really pay attention to what they report and how they report. Read a few stories on the BBC, then go to al jazera and read the same stories. Both sides are valid and both sides are obviously biased.

I read news through google quite a lot, I get news from a lot of different sources, and I often read al-jazeera. The BBC usually follows the format I mentioned above. When I say facts, I mean all important facts.
They even ran a couple of articles on mushrooms recently that gave a fairly balanced perspective on them.

Ah, but there is no money in reporting important facts. The people want tabloid news, not important facts. (I read the BBC quite often as well to try and get the European bias... )

I think the main goal of almost any news media is to make money, not push an agenda. I think even companies that have found a niche on either side of the spectrum (Foxnews on the right, the New York Times on the left), are biased because they've found a sweet market there, not cause they're part of a large conspiracy. I think most of the media in the middle, like the big three networks, have found solid demographics in the middle of the road, and they want to stay there. I think that bias in the news is a problem only when it's denied. If media outlets want to be biased, that's cool, but they need to be honest about it. For Foxnews to make its slogan Fair and Balanced is the absolutley worst sort of abuse of trust that the public gives the media. But it's done wonders for Rupert Murdoch's stock, so I'm sure he's gonna stick with it. And, let's face it, few people in the world have any authority over him.

Making money is an agenda in itself. It usually makes for a corporate-friendly bias, as corporations tend to be owners and/or advertisers in the news business.

Unless you can find an audience that likes to read about corporations being maligned

True. I'm sure many corporations would be glad to have a news network badmouthing them as long as it meant more money for them.
