I had been planning a long walk over the peaks since my last visit in July. I choose the wrong day to go walking, it poured with rain the whole time! Anyway, a little or even a lot of rain wasn't going to put me off.
Here is a picture taken at the start of the walk, i'm heading over the horizon to the bottom of the dale, across the river and up into the woods and back round.

I very soon started finding lots of clumps of Panaeolus sphinctrinus,
they are very common in most pastures and seem to thrive on rain, unlike liberty caps.

Here is an average size Panaeolus sphinctrinus

But then i found the mother of all Panaeolus sphinctrinus, i checked it carefully and made a possitive id.

Ok, its still raining and i'm as wet as i'm going to be so i head for the woods, nearly there.

I noticed a feature on the map and was very surprised when i got there, it was a small gorge in the woods, the pictures speak for them selves, I have never seen anything like it in the UK, in the tropics yes, not on the moors though!

It was nice in the woods, mainly very old Oak and Birch, I found this lovely little specimin under an oak, Calocera Viscosa, Jelly Antler Fungus.

By the time I got back to the car four hours later, I discovered that my bag of shrooms had turned into a black mush, all ruined, ah well still enjoyed the walk.

When i went July, Liberty Caps were well up, lots of new ones springing up and older ones as well. I briefly checked two fields and picked about 70 in 20 mins. I didn't have time to pick it properly as it was getting late but I thought, great, heads up, I'll come back in a few weeks and pick several thousand. I checked the same fields and found ONE liberty cap, I can only presume that there has been too much rain. I'll wait for the fields to dry out a bit and go back, that is if it stops raining!

Everytime I see the rolling hills on England I think of that movie.."The sound of music." PS. Looks like good Liberty Cap habitat.
