Radiohead - Fitter, Happier
    #3036261 - 08/22/04 12:46 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Another interesting song by Radiohead, Fitter Happier is "spoken" by a computer (the voice sounds remarkably like Stephen Hawking's voice synthesizer, but was made on Thom's own computer) with very little background music to it. Some people see it as just an intermission on OK Computer, but others (myself included) see it as a sum of all the imagery on OK Computer. Rumor has it that Thom programed his computer to randomly chose phrases and throw them together. The words and imagery obviously go along with the band's (and especially Thom's) views of our moden society. Alienation, helplessness, insecurity. In the end we are all just pieces of a larger whole, and in most cases have little control over how we contribute to that whole: our contributions are decided for us, ahead of time, and we are held to them by society's expectations. We are protected, but not for our own good: for the good of the whole. As the last line reads: we are pigs, in cages, on antibiotics.

Radiohead - Fitter, Happier

Fitter, happier, more productive
Comfortable
Not drinking too much
Regular exercise at the gym
(3 days a week)
Getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries
At ease
Eating well
(No more microwave dinners and saturated fats)
A patient better driver
A safer car
(Baby smiling in back seat)
Sleeping well
(No bad dreams)
No paranoia
Careful to all animals
(Never washing spiders down the plughole)
Keep in contact with old friends
(Enjoy a drink now and then)
Will frequently check credit at (moral) bank (hole in the wall)
Favours for favours
Fond but not in love
Charity standing orders
On Sundays ring road supermarket
(No killing moths or putting boiling water on the ants)
Car wash
(Also on Sundays)
No longer afraid of the dark or midday shadows
Nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate
Nothing so childish - at a better pace
Slower and more calculated
No chance of escape
Now self-employed
Concerned (but powerless)
An empowered and informed member of society
(Pragmatism not idealism)
Will not cry in public
Less chance of illness
Tires that grip in the wet
(Shot of baby strapped in back seat)
A good memory
Still cries at a good film
Still kisses with saliva
No longer empty and frantic like a cat tied to a stick
That's driven into frozen winter shit
(The ability to laugh at weakness)
Calm
Fitter
Healthier and more productive
A pig, in a cage, on antibiotics...

I think one method he uses is clipping words from newspapers and putting them in a hat and drawing them at random

Fitter, Happier seems 1984-inspired.

I'm sort of a Radiohead fanatic...I've seen them live 9 times, 8 times of which were in a one year period on this last Hail to the Thief tour...followed them to Red Rocks in Colorado and then to Vancouver where they played back to back shows with REM and Michael Stipe and Thom Yorke guest spotted during each other's show...so anyway, what I'm getting to is, even people who love Radiohead, in reviews or mentions of OK Computer, I just know so many people that think that Fitter, Happier is a pretentious track that kills the mood and momentum of the CD - I think it's perfect, especially where it is in the CD...I love hearing "on antibiotics." followed by the tambourine in Electioneering...yum!

Thanks for typing all the words out, trendal, usually hear them but it's nice to read them like they're poetry.

I must admit I never got into Radiohead. I've given them an honest try and even saw their recent documentary in the theaters. It's just too mellow and winey sounding for my taste. I can see why people like them though. It's just not my thing but I REALLY like those lyrics you posted. I'd be interested to hear that song.

Mellow? Woah, which albums have you listened to KC? Kid A and Amnesiac are definitely mellower (and I love both) but what about The Bends? I love all Radiohead but The Bends is them at their best, IMO...pure rock and roll. I don't mind their use of computers one bit, but The Bends shows why they were ready to use them...they'd already made bitches out of their usual instruments.

Actually yes Kid A and Amnesiac are the two I've listened to all the way through. Never heard The Bends though. Maybe I'll give it a listen.

Pablo Honey, their first CD, well, I'm not a big fan of it. Good start though! The Bends is just rock yumminess, OK Computer is where Fittier, Happier came from - that album is also pretty damn intense. And as for their latest opus, Hail to the Thief...the first track is like a return to rock anthem of sorts...it's great!

I must say that Radiohead is the one of the most overrated bands around, but to each his/her own.

I think "polyethylene" is probly one of their best straight out rockin songs...

Never get tired of hearin that one...

Plastic bag, middle class, polyethylene
Decaffeinate, unleaded, keep all surfaces clean

Reminds me of how shitty modern life is...

A lot of their unreleaseds, like polyethylene, are gems...Lozenge of Love, Melatonin, Pearly, Killer Cars is an awesome one..

Cool, I was in the headzone the night before, standing right beneath Micheal Stipe and Thom York as they belted out It's The End of the World As We Know It together...grand.
