Why not simply dry them in the sun, if you are going to use heat?

ya, farenheit and I'm sure Staments expanded on the basic principle of using moving warm air long before I thought of it! anybody who thinks warm air, (NOT hot) air is going to hurt their shrooms just doesn't have a clue.

Max is right. The (if ANY) potency loss would be so miniscule, that you would never know it when consuming them. I use a food dehydrator/w a fan( it is pretty much the same), and I have never had a problem with potency loss. Max, try the dehydrator out, it will probably be cheaper in the long run:) Dioze1

Pavlov's Dog, In response to your attack regarding "how long you been a mycologist?" I am not a mycologist, and either is Captain Max. Neither of us have degrees in mycology, we are plain cultivators. Am I an expert? Yes, in cubensis cultivation I would say I'm years ahead of you and max, judging by the pictures he posts on his site (Australian, Nice pic) and the lack there of that I've seen from you on this board, Pavlov. And no, I am not trying to clown him, that is probably the first time I've ever responded to Captains posts. You guys demonstrate your knowledge and experience when you attack people like little kids, it really reflects your "professionalism" I guess you could say. Its pretty sad, especially coming from a vendor.

holydiver, I don't have a digital camera or I would post more pics. My interest in mycology goes much deeper than 'one specie'. Check out my Gallery of Mt. Elphie mushrooms, linked at the SporeLab site, and featuring over 60 pics of wild mushrooms that I took over the last 8 years. Most are correctly identified. How many do you recognize?

And what of the dehydrators? I know the excelsior, or something similar, has an adjustable thermostat. But I really don't know what the low temp is, maybe 80 or 90 degrees. If my memory serves me correctly it is also rather expensive. Somewhere in the range of $200-300. This could all be way off though I don't remember to clearly. But anyway, would that be a sufficiently low enough temp.?

"And if you don't sell them then what is the worry about some of the fruits being less potent as long as they don't get wasted?" cause you would have to consume more for the same effect? I used to be able to eat them like cheetos..but any more i seem to have difficulty swallowing cubes. o well its fiber right :) in my experience fresh is the way to go for maximum effect..its just the taste. so i use the hold your nose and slam technique (mixed in oj). probably all in my head but it makes me queasy at first anymore.

the way i understand the caps tek, the oven is not used per se because of the small amount of heat it generates, but instead because it dries out the surrounding air. circulating this dry air dries the shrooms. because the oven air is circulated, the shrooms will never get hot. its certainly an interesting question though. i mean, if you have 70 degrees room temp, how much difference is 80 degree circulating air do? and about cutting the shrooms, if you have real big ones you HAVE to, or theyll never dry. i have no idea of an alternative.

A regular forced air dehydrator [no heat] will get them "nearly" cracker dry in 18-24 hrs. If its winter and room humidity low, it will be even faster, summer and sticky...it'll take longer. In the summer it is often humid enough in many places that you can't get them totally dry without using either a little heat or a jar with some dry-rite.

At least dirtmaster understands. I'm not saying this is how mushrooms should be dried but a lot of people are impatient so this is for them. As for the usual naysayers, try it if you don't believe it. The 'heat' is so low that any loss is so miniscule as to be a moot point. For those who want to dry their shrooms in a hurry, it would not be even be a consideration. And there are times when using a quick drying tek is the only option, because you're going out of town for a few days or checking into a hospital or something else has come up that is going to keep you busy and you've got these shrooms that are going to go rotten...use your imagination. Thiers a million reasons why someone might need a quick drying tek. This is for them. Ya, some of the pics didn't turn out to great but when I was taking them, I wasn't thinking web page, I didn't even own a computer at the time. I was eventually able to borrow a digital, there are some nice pics in the Digital Gallery.
