cracked corn as substrate questions

Could i sterilize 12 or so quart sized jars and let them sit for 2 weeks or so before innoculation? Would this hurt results or anything? Also, if i am planning to innoculate these jars by doing G2G. Do i still need to punch holes in the lid before sterilzation?
Also, should i put tinfoil under the lid and also above it before sterilzation? Will i have problems with the jars being 'canned' if i dont?
Thanks

They should be fine for 2 weeks if you sterilize them correctly but should be used ASAP so if you can wait you probably should. It could increase the risk of a contam. You will still need at least one hole for air exchange and you should use tyvek (from priority envelopes found at your post office) between the lid and the ring. You can put tin foil over that for PCing to keep water content right but I dont. Then just PC and innoc when you can. Make sure you use a very sterile environment for G2G.

I knocked up one jar without a tyvek filter. I just placed tinfoil over the jar and lid, PC'd, let it cool, then stuck the syrnge straight through the tinfoil into the jar hole, then quickly put another layer of tinfoil over again. it is placed in the incubator now. Will this be sufficiant even though there is no airflow? This will just be used as my source for G2G
should i build a glovebox for the g2g? or would cleaning a bathroom, then lysoling it would be good enough?
thanks

You MUST use a filter. The jar you did is guaranteed to contaminate. Tin foil is not a filter. Its only purpose is to keep the water that 'rains' down from the lid of your PC from getting into the jars and messing up the ratio. I'm not a big fan of tyvek, although others have good luck with it. I like the synthetic filter disks that are available through the mushroom supply vendors. Be sure to use the filter as scatmanrav said, between the lid and the metal ring. It needs to be on the outside of the jar so it won't get wet when you shake the jar.
Also, I know of very few folks who have had success with cracked corn. It has bacterial endospores that are heat resistant, so they survive the PC and almost always contaminate. Popcorn will work better, rye berries will work better than popcorn, and rye grass seed will work better than either, but is harder to use.

Interesting, most dont reccoment rye grass for cubies. I actually had a few jars left over from Tamps and threw some brazilian spawn in them a couple days ago just to see what would happen since I was doing some transfers anyway. I wasnt expecting them to do better then berries but it'll be interesting if they do..its not incredibly hard to use (though I wouldnt suggest it for a complete newbie, start with berries they work easy)
Oh by the way, those rye grass jars sat for 10 or 11 days after being PCed to when I knocked them up. I'm confident in my sterilization though and nothing started showing yet. Which reminds me...if you do let them sit for two weeks..just before you innoculate, tip them upside down and shake them slowly around to make sure there is no unwanted growth..Good luck with that jar with tin foil..I'd bet its gonna contam with no filter though. You can also stuff polyfil in the holoes if you dont like working with tyvek (or the filter disks RR suggested).

Really....i've had no problems with indigenous endospores in cracked corn as the source of infection.....hell, the main problem i've had has been bacterial due to the water content. If one simmers the corn correctly, any endospores present will be available n destroyable by the heat....
Where are you getting your info?

Corn Meal Agar -------------- 15 g Agar 2 g Corn Meal, Infusion from [I assume you filter this] 1 L dH2O
Source: Sigma
Corn is very rich and contaminates very easily.

I just did up 6 quarts of cracked corn, without a filter, just double wrap of foil. I have "No" contam. cracked corn is killer.:)

The bacteria is not from the water, but from the corn itself. Simmering or even PC'ing will not kill them all. You can try a 48 hour soak to germinate the endospores, then PC, and it will help. My information comes from experience. Besides, rye grains are far superior to corn anyway. Use what is easiest for you, but my recommendation to one and all is rye grain. Without a filter, there is virtually no chance that cracked corn or any other spawn is going to make it to the fruiting stage. Peace all, and happy growing.

Thanks for the info everyone, the corn went as everyone said. Contamed within about 10 days or so after innoc. Anyway, im going to give a run of rye grain next time i get around to it. ill get a few other methods a shot, but definetly will not space out the filter. Thanks

You are just very lucky you do not have contaims using a double layer of foil.
If you make that a habit you will for sure be going thru alot of jars.
Without an air filter of some sort the jars when they cool down suck in air. This is a law of physics, You can not avoid the Fact.

The way I deal with the suction created by cooling is to place the jars post-PC directly into a STERILE Rubbermaide container that is used only forthis. Clean as you would a casing tray or incubator, place your jars into this immediatly from the pressure cooker, after a good shaking if they are grains. should work fine .
