Salvaging/ Saving cakes?
    #2983333 - 08/09/04 07:52 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

I've been using the PF tek to grow PC Koh Samui, I've lost 4 out of 6 jars due to contams (didn't have the jars warm enough). That problem solved the remaining two jars are 97% colonized, about to be taken out of the incubator as pins are starting to form.

I've just found 2 green mould secs (and i mean specs-half the size of a match head) on the base of one jar (jars have been upside down for a week or so). Obviously wanting to salvage the jar, should I birth the cake, remove the mould (and a sizable area around it) in the hope of the saving it? Even though only a few pins (without brown heads) have begun to form?

Naturally I'll birth and keep this cake far away from my other cakes. Or should i let the pins develop at a room temp for another few days and pray the fully colonised mycelium will win out over the mould? (very unlikely I'd think)

Its not a recommended practice but a lot of people do it including myself sometimes. I'd do it now if you're going to do it, especially since you said they're 97% anyway.

Thanks atomic1, the cake thats infected is practically done - there's just a 1cm patch thats not compleatly covered with mycelium, with the rest of the cake a dense mycelium ball. Birthing now

Not a problem, be sure and cut that uncolonized part off also, if you haven't already.
