Need ID please
    #2972961 - 08/06/04 05:25 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Alright, i found this today in Tennessee, and when i broke the cap in half, it was yellow, but it bruised blue immediately. Within 4 seconds it was dark blue. The caps are solid and about an inch tall. Gills were yellow, one looks like a very fine sponge and the other has gills, but they're both the same muchsroom. The gills were yellow, and the top was reddish purple looking. What is it and is it edible?? My friend said so..

Very rapid blueing of a bolete (which is what you have) is often indicative of that bolete being poisonous. If you want a better ID to species, we need a better description.

In the meantime, assume it's poisonous.

Happy mushrooming!

Are you sure my friend eats them? I would trust someone who knows what they're talking about though, so whatever you guys say goes.

More info.
The mushrooms don't really have a smell, and the stems are soft, if you rub your finger along it.

boletus miniato-olivaceus or a close relitive maybe, blue staining bolets are considered by most best left alone. although in Newguinie the tribespeople take a blueing variety to get off. :mushroom2:

If one has gills ,the other a bolet. They are not the same mushroom. You are safer assuming all mushrooms that you don't know are poison.Throw them away and stay alive.

"although in Newguinie the tribespeople take a blueing variety to get off."

Please enlighten us about this supposedly active bolete. A Latin name would be especially helpful.

Actually after closer inspection they both have gills, its just that they have a spongy thing on top, so you dont see them unless you break it open. if you look close in the picture at the largest mushroom, look at its gills on the right, you should see a small yellow tip on the gills, thats the surface that covers them

Heimiella angrieformis and boletus reayi are a couple of the bolets used by the Kuma tribe of NewGuinea

The mushrooms in your photos do not have gills. The tubes are obvious on the underside of the caps. These are boletes. As far as I know there are no active boletes. There are many species of boletes which bruise blue; they are very common. Some are edible; some are poisonous. None will get you high.

ToxicMan is our wise old mushroom guru. He's the guy the hospital calls to ID a mushroom when someone shows up in the emergency room. It looks poisonous to ToxicMan, and it looks poisonous to me. I would seriously doubt the report of a "friend" who can not identify a supposedly active mushroom to species.

Please do yourself a favor and refrain from eating poisonous mushrooms.

As shroomydan said, those are not gills. They are tubes.

There are a few edible species of bluing boletes(not worth eating from what I hear) but it's just plain stupid to eat them without a positive ID.

Those are quite clearly tubes.

As for your friends body high, he's poisoning himself.

Well from the replies on the bluing Bolets it is obvious that we need a member of the Kuma tribe (newguinea highlands) as a moderator on this thread, as there are many bolets that are in the active league.
I have been wondering about the speces in the forests of the southern hemesphere,
maybe somone will be stupid enough to try ,well Buddha could tell us :mushroom2:

i have only recently heard of the active [non psilocybian] boletes myself [from Mr. Allen]. i have not heard anything of them before, and would guess that they are not common considering the large amount of people who go by the rule of "if it has pores, dosen't bruise blue and tastes good, it won't hurt me" aproach to bolete hunting. especialy considering many people also widen that to "dosen't bruise blue quickly".

--------------------

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I don't know what those are... definitely a bolete, but they've been turning up all over Tennessee... or at least where I am.

They have a burgandy colored cap that borders on brown and are spongey and bright yellow underneath. They bruise the fastest I've ever seen a mushroom bruise, and it's a greenish blue color. I always toss em... don't look very friendly.
