yeah, wtf?
the book says to expect whitish mycelium - is this for real, or a contam? here is pleurotus pulmonaris on an identical agar plate. it's white:

That sucks. . .if there is cyanescens mycelium there, it has a friend! Rarely, I've seen PD/Y/A agars change color slightly upon colonization, but never like that. You said it was a peroxide plate. . .I wonder if the concentration is a little too low for this competitor? Can you make out two types of growth?

i've seen a contam that someone said was lipstick mold before, and this looks nothing like that one: this purple stuff took off across the plate like that in way less than a week. can anyone confirm its origin? so what is it?

Hmmm, I've had a culture look like that before.. it didn't come from Loki did it? What about Neurospora? I know it's referred to as the Pink/Red Bread Mold but it looks kinda purple to me. Pink Mold; Red Bread Mold ? Neurospora Commonly to occasionally seen on agar and grain. Neurospora is fast growing, sometimes taking only 24 four hours to totally colonize a media filled petri dish. It is ubiquitous in nature, occurring on dung, in soils and on decaying plant matter. Since this fungus grows through cotton stoppers or filter discs, a single contaminated jar, though sealed, can spread spores to adjacent spawn jars within the laboratory. This condition is more likely if the filter discs or cotton plugs are the least bit damp; or if the external humidity is high. Furthermore, Neurospora spores germinate more readily at elevated temperatures. The pink mold seen in mushroom culture is most frequently Neurospora sitophila, a pernicious contaminant that is difficult to eliminate. All infected cultures should be removed as soon as possible from the laboratory and destroyed. A thorough cleaning of the laboratory is absolutely necessary. If contamination persists, remove all spawn and start anew.

I stole those pics and desription straight from the shroomery FAQ. I've definately had that same contam on agar before and put it down to Neurospora as Lipstick mold didn't seem to come close to it..

Some species turn agar plates colors, Morchella turnes the agar to a dark brown/black, cordeceps turn agar red. SO maybe some how some one sent you a cordeceps culture instead.
