Loafs: I took two small 'loaf' pans. Like little bread loaf pans. Cut the cakes into halves from top to bottom. Then I put about a 1/4 " layer of 50/50+ on the bottom of the pan. Placed 3 halves flat side down atop the casing layer. They looked like three little speed bumps side by side. Then I filled in the area so that it was flat accross the top with a thin layer of the same casing. Waited a week. They were colonized such that you could hardly tell they were cased. They look kinda like pf 'loafs'. When the are birthed, they are turned upside down again such that they taper alightly toward the top. They are placed in a pan with about a 1/2' of wet verm in it. They also have a sprinkingling of verm on top. They have lots of surface area and are a nice tight loaf. You see? They started pinning 5 days being exposed to light. The loaf on the right is a day ahead of the one on the left.

In response to the swamp water, I am not seeing much difference in the colonization speed. Both sets of jars are colonizing FAST. Perhaps a better test will be to see if they fruit differently. At present, there is no noticable difference.

Thanks BluHoney! I have been jealous of your work (and your pics :-) since I started at this.

quick question: how did u collonize this loaf? was it colonized in a terrarium, and was it aired out frequently?

I ask this because I just lost a batch of PF 50/50 casings to contams very early on, and I'm trying to figure out what i can do.

After casing, the loaves were covered with aluminum foil to keep the moisture in. Once a day they were opened and fanned just a bit and promptly closed again. Try to do this in as much darkness as you can. 2 times during the week of colonization, the tops were misted with mineral water. Looked like the mycelium was soakin' the water up. After a week, they were almost fully white with fuzz. When they were birthed, the tops (which had been the bottom), were solid white. You could only see a few tiny spots of casing. No probs with contams this way

I forgot to mention something important! The cakes were made from TALL 1/2 pint jars. When they were cut in half, they just fit in the loaf pan. If you will lay three tall jars side by side you will get an idea of the size of the pan i used. Three cake halves fit in perfectly. Flat side down, speed bump up

Thanks, Rhino. My friend's compost water jars are still in the vault (innoc'd on Friday). I'll keep you posted. A peek will be in order in the next day or two.

These loafs were brought to life in a 10 gallon aquarium. There is perlite on the bottom. There is a little (bout 2" x 4")aluminum pan on one side. Inside that pan is a 3" bubbler stone in and 0.75% solution of Hydrogen Peroxide. The bubbler provides humidity as well as providing some additional air into the tank between fannings. The light is a 15w flourecent bought at home depot for $9.99. The daylight bulb was an x-tra 4 bucks. Timer for the light (14 on / 10 off) was 5 bucks. The humidity meter was bought at radio shack as you can see from the pic. It was on sale for $19.99. The 10 gallon aquarium and the top were purchased at Petco for $22.00. The air pump for the bubbler was bought the same place for $5.99. Tubing, bubbler stone, and aluminum pans were a few of bucks collectively.

All in all I have a fairly maintainance free little setup for under $75.00. I do fan when I can, but this flush was left for 2 days during their development without a single fanning. I had to be out of town. Thanks to the air I get from the pump, I don't think it needs fanning as much as a straight perlite humidified terrarium.
