Rewarding Hunt- Chanterelles and more!
    #2929051 - 07/26/04 03:00 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Found in south Jersey yesterday:

Cantharellus Cibarius and possibly Cantharellus Cinnabarius as well

Also,
Many yellow-gilled, slowly blue staining boletes (I usually find fast-bruisers)
A variety of red staining Lepiota
A variety of pale gilled, brown capped bolete,
Amanita Rubescens (I think)
Amanita Cesaria (possibly)
Amanita Vaginata
A pastel-rust-spored chocolate colored milky
a pale-spored pinkish milky
A dark and pungent (smells like chinese food) tooth(?) fungus growing around a beech tree
a bunch of little mycenas and psathyrellas,
of course, many polypores

I'm sorry for the horendous pictures, but hopefully you can make out the sexy outline of the chanterelles. They were tasty!

Ohh, lots of jelly fungus, slime mold, and many varieties of Russula from pale green to bright red to deep purple.

Nice find's nycomyco...
Now you need to get a decent camera..
So we can all appreciate and check out
the ID's on those others.... Keep up the good work...
do you have a scanner??? They work wonders in place
of a camera....

The orange one may be cinnabarrius....
Although I find when they are that young they
they usually look more orange to me...
Did you find any black trumpets along side those
chanterelles..?????? Every time I find chanterells
I always find black trumpets with them....Nofindum...

Thanks Nofindum,
I know- sometimes the camera takes really good pics, but sometimes, like this, they suck. no scanner unfortunately. I think you're right about the cinnabarrius. I think it may actually me C. Minutus because it wasn't quite red and it's taste was very spicy compared to the milder Cibarius, which i find in most of the Minutus I find (and these seem to be the most common chanterelle hereabouts. As for black trumpets, no luck yet. I did find that weird tooth fungus right around an old beech, and it looked like a black trumpet a bit, but was much too dense and had little craters on its surface and not ridges. Thanks!

I've been finding tons and tons of black trumpets right along with the chanterelles. I cam home with about a pound, I'd guess. They were growing under scrubby pines near oak and beech. THere were about 4 large patches within a 100 foot radius. I made a trumpet/chanterelles sauce with grilled salmon: very tasty.
