My cat vibrates his tail! What does it mean?
    #2908155 - 07/20/04 11:04 AM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Okay, I have a male cat who is ultra-affectionate. He'll often follow me around the house and every time I sit down he is right up on my lap.

Well, sometimes when he REALLY wants me to pet him, he'll meow and meow and rub up against my leg...but then he'll vibrate his tail. Seriously, his entire tail will just start vibrating like the tail of a rattle snake.

What does this mean? Why does he do this? Does anyone else have a male cat that does this?

He's fixed and everything too, by the way.

It's a reaction to the cat's pleasure. He simply feels mad good when you pet him.

He is a robot spy from an alien race. They are called the Craptonians and they put robot cats into unsuspecting people's homes in order to gather information about human beings. They can be disabled with xray blacktop novacane laser beams.

yeah my pussy vibrates too. I actually thought it was cause he once broke his tail a couple years ago, and it has a permanent bend in it. The tail is part of a cats spine so I thought he was just all fucked up and has seizures now. But he does it when he's hungry and I'm in the kitchen... not neccesarily when I pet him. When I pet him he just purrs and closes his eyes.

Mine does the exact same thing, especially when he wants to be petted. I thought I had the only vibro-kitty!

Its a natural thing. Both my cats (both female) do it. And it seems to be directly tied to anticipation. They only do it when they really want you to pet them or when they know you are fixing food or getting a treat out for them.

My older cats tail goes bonkers if you pull out the milk jug and show it to her. I've never given her milk but she came from a shelter and her previous owners must have given it to her. And still, 8 years later, it triggers a response in her. Weird.

Actually wild cats tails are erect and vibrate when they spray, if your cat is fixed he/she's trying to mark their territory by spreading sent. If it's not fixed he/she's spraying.

^^^ These guys are exactly right. When they spray they vibrate their tales. In the wild a cat will cover a vast territory and mark it's boundries with its special scent.(unbelievable nasty funk if you've ever smelled it!) If you ever notice when you re-arrange the furniture or just straighten up the house cats will run around sort of frantically inspecting and mapping any changes to "its" territory.
As for the vibration when you are petting it.. It is sort of a mix of,I love you so much and it's way of saying "you are all mine" by trying to mark you as his territory.

Sorry about your luck if your cat isnt fixed and pulls this little number on ya!

Cats are so damn cool!

My cat used to always go around rubbing her cheek on chairs, corners, my leg etc, and i thought this was her way of marking her territory...anyone elses cat do that?

also, how about when they dig there claws into your leg, on paw then the other, when you're petting them? I heard thats its becasue they used to do it to their mother when they wanted to be fed...true or false...

yep cats are cool, so relaxing...unless its one of those stressed out cats..

but dogs are so cool too!!

Yeah, my cats always rub spastically all over me and my furniture. I read somewhere that cats have little scent glands in their cheeks, and when they rub like that they are saying, "this is mine!"

watch them in front of a cave with a few rodents in it... just before they pounce on something the set their feet, crouch and then comes the tail twitch....

I have also noticed the same behavior in ferrets.
