Think of what you are saying man! I imagine that you would get a better yeild if you didn't even bother to case, remember is is all about surface area. You could probably use 2 cakes per 11" x 9" area (more experienced ppl plz correct me if I am mistaken), that means from 12 cakes you could have 6 TIMES the yeild that you would get from your propsed setup. My suggestion would be to not case or to expand or construct more terrarium space. I am pretty new to all this to but from what I have read this is a sound suggestion.

It isn't necessarily about surface area. On one hand it is, and on the other, it isnt. Higher yields are more relative to available nutrients and even moreso, available h2o. If I were to case in a 11" x 9" pan, I would use a lot more than 2 cakes. I always use a substrate layer at LEAST a half inch thick but sometimes as much as 2 inches thick depending upon the amount of available colonized substrate that I have.

A casing will hold enough water to keep the substrate flushing nicely, provided it stays contaminant free. This is the only catch with casings: they are more prone to contaminants. But the benefits greatly outweigh the risks.

The more surface area the mushrooms can fruit from is definitely good, but that surface area is worthless without water. I'd concentrate more on providing enough water as opposed to surface area.
