Upgrade an older computers Ram?

I have a fairly old computer. From about '98 I think. It was pretty sweat then, but now it is just ok. I runs slower than I would want. I have pentium III processor at 933 MHz, and 128 megs of ram. I am running Windows ME currently. But I am ready to upgrade. ME has been giving me trouble lately, so I went and purchased an upgrade to XP. I have yet to install it. I am thinking about buying a 512 MB DDR ram chip. Do you all think that the ram upgrade will really make that much of a difference. I am just worried that I will be wasting my money because my processor is so slow. So do you guys think it would be worth it to upgrade the ram to 512 MB?

I'm almost positive that didn't take DDR memory. I think you need to just get PC100 ram.
XP can run on 128 but really needs at least 256. But I have a computer I use for Word and to run XP that is I think a 400Mhz processor with 256mb Ram and it runs fine.

What do you mean that it can't take DDR memory? Can my computer not handle that? And what is PC100 ram? Is that SDram?

Mother boards are made to be used with a particular type of ram.
You'd need to look up the specs for your board. Different types of ram have different numbers of pins. DDR may not even be the same physical size as what you have now. Consult the book that came with your moboard or log onto the manufacturers web site. If all else fails take to ram to a computer store and ask.

Cool, THanks. But do you guys think that an upgrade to 512 MB is worth it. I know what you are going to ask next, what are you using your computer for. Well i mostly use it for music, studying, surfing the web, money management, and word processing. But I do enjoy running multiple programs simultaniously. Do you think I would benifit from this memory upgrade? Do you think XP will run smoother with the upgrade?

More ram is almost always better. Motherboards have limits though. Consult your manual.
I run a gig myself and I'm very happy with the increase in smoothness from my earlier 512m.

> More ram is almost always better. Wow... I am impressed. Most people would mistakenly claim that more ram is always better. (... not much to worry about on having too much, on Intel, until you get into the multi-gigs... and even then, until you get up around 16G it is all good... after that, performace can be severly degraded if the OS design is poor. It can actually take 1 to 2 GB of main memory to store the data structures to manage 64G of memory if using 4k pages... this can be very tight if your running process and kernel must both fit into 32-bit address space (4 GB) total...)

I remember some tests made with win98 back in those days. They compared the same system running with 512 Mb ram and then with 1Gb. Curiously, the test was faster when using 512Mb. The problem is OS related ... From 98, you are surely using some sdram based mobo. I think a P3 at 933 run a 133 Mhz memory bus, although there are some models running a 100 Mhz memory bus at that time as well. Also the x86 architecture supports up to 4Gb of Ram memory but i don't think you need that much Anyway, IMHO i would buy 1Gb of Ram at 133 Mhz, 512 Mb is ok depending on what you do with the PC.

512 ram is almost to little sometimes, im runnin on 256 for the time being (until my parts come in), and I cant believe how slow it is compared to 512. 128 has to be pretty bad, virtual memory all the time.
