Hi all! Hopefully this thread is allowed here. I'm not an expert but wanted to ask minds far more knowledgeable than mine, for advice/thoughts.
Short version question: I have MCAS and my body reacts to many things normal people wouldn't. I loaded up a food dehydrator with cubes (3-4oz dry), turned it on, and I had a horrible intense allergic-like reaction. Aside from mushroom spores, what else could I have reacted to?
My other thoughts is perhaps it was A) metabolites from the mushrooms I reacted to, from being aerosolized by the dehydrator; or B) perhaps there were heavy contams (mold spores/toxins) that hadn't quite visually presented yet, and they were coating some of the mushrooms, and I blasted those into the air.
I have something called MCAS, which can make someone react to just about anything, though. I was trying to think what else it could have been if not spores.
I have two good air purifiers; I stuck them in the "contaminated" rooms and after a few hours I could walk in without a reaction. But, whatever I spread through the air, it messed up my apartment for myself. It's going to take a while to fully remove all the mysterious allergens from the air and nooks and crannies. Friends came over and had 0 issues, this is just a "me" thing.
Thanks so much for reading, and considering!!
Info: For 3+ years I've been getting more and more ill. Mold sensitivity issues are one part of my health puzzle. If I'm near a high enough density of mold spores or mycotoxins, I react quickly; I get a needle-like prickly intense itching across my forehead, GI issues next, and hours later I have chest tightness for at least half a day. I know I react this way to Aspergillus mold, specifically. If I leave the heavy spore/toxin area, the acute itching subsides within 3-10mins, depending on the severity of exposure.
I reacted that same way to my mushrooms dehydrating the other night. My first thought was mushroom spores caused my reaction, because one of my tubs sporulated before harvesting. Turning on my dehydrator would have blasted the spores (or whatever I reacted to) all over my bathroom (and the rooms connected to it, to a lesser degree). This theory is further backed by multiple exposures to cube spores from past cultivation runs, 1-2yrs ago, where I let cubes sporulate sometimes, and I was fruiting in my bedroom. I know RogerRabbit mentioned his allergic development to a specific mushroom variety, and I know heavily-sporulating mushrooms (like gourmet Oysters) can cause perfectly healthy people to develop an allergy/sensitivity. Well, I slept in a room/apartment with a high spore count unknowingly.

Most likely a reaction to the spores. A normal "healthy" individual can develop chest/lung reactions from working with heavy spore loads too frequently, a similar way breathing too much dust of any kind is not good.
