Advanced Morning Glory LSA Cold Water Extraction Method * 2

Advanced Morning Glory LSA Extraction Method

Required Materials: (most of these items can be found at a large retail and/or hardware store)

Digital Scale
Fresh, Organic Morning Glory seeds
Electric Coffee Grinder
Purified, Filtered, or Artesian water chilled in the Fridge
Large bag of Ice Cubes
Roll of Paper Towels
2 Long 15mL+ Glass Pipettes
Plastic or Glass Funnel
500mL Erlenmeyer Flask with a Screw-On Cap (Amber-colored glass is preferred, if you can find one. This is an Online-only item.)
Magnetic Stir Plate (optional)
Short Oval or Cross-Shaped Magnetic Stir Bar
Cheese Cloth
Sharp Pair of Scissors
Set of 8 Heavy-duty Mini-Spring Utility Clips
Two 2.5 Quart Plastic Measuring Mixing Buckets
One 5 Quart Plastic Measuring Mixing Bucket
2 Gallon Plastic Bucket
Coffee Filters or Lab Filters with a Large Filter Funnel
2 Chilled 16oz or 20oz Amber-colored glass bottles or empty 16 fl oz. plastic bottles (for temporary storage of the LSA CWE)
Tang Powder, Kool-Aid powder or other beverage-flavoring powder/liquid.


Process:

This method is used to make one dose and should be done at night using as little/dimmed light as possible. Weigh your dose of Morning Glory seed you want to have for 1 trip using your digital scale. Grind your Morning Glory seeds in the electric coffee grinder. Powder them as fine as possible. Shake the grinder up and down while its running to help with fine powdering. Wait about 2-3 minutes for the dust to settle.

Now to set up the Advanced Extraction System.

Stage the 500mL Erlenmeyer Flask right next to the magnetic stir plate. Take cap off of Flask. Carefully tilt the Flask to its side then slide your oval or cross-shaped magnetic stir bar down into the Flask. Briefly place the flask on your magnetic stir plate to center the magnetic stir bar on the bottom of the flask. After centering the stir bar, pull the flask upwards off of the stir plate. Place the plastic funnel onto the top of your Erlenmeyer Flask then carefully transfer the seed powder into funnel. Shake/tap the funnel to help the powder drop into the flask from the funnel. Get as much powder out of your coffee grinder using clean, dry hands.

After filling up the Flask with your Morning Glory seed powder, remove the funnel. Next, place a 2.5 Quart Plastic Measure Bucket on top of your magnetic stir plate. Make sure its centered in the middle of the stir plate. Now, carefully place the sealable 500mL Erlenmeyer Flask inside of the 2.5 Quart bucket. Re-center the flask-beaker or flask-mixing bucket combo on the magnetic stir plate. Next, start adding pieces of ice to the 2.5 Quart plastic mixing bucket on top and around the sides of the sealable 500mL Erlenmeyer Flask. Fill up the mixing bucket about half way with ice cubes. Leave some room as the ice with melt into cold water and take up a larger volume in the Beaker. This is your ice bath for the Flask and its critical that the Flask is inside an ice bath at all times during the extraction.

This extraction can also be done without a magnetic stir plate. This other method requires periodic "manual mixing" which involves picking up the 500mL Flask, holding it horizontally (make sure the cap is tight on the threads) and shaking it back and forth in a reciprocating motion.

Let the ice inside the 2 gallon plastic bucket chill the 500mL flask to a cold, icy temp for about 5-10 minutes. After the Flask has been chilled, put the funnel back on top of your Flask and pour in your chilled Purified, Filtered or Artesian water into the funnel to rinse the Morning Glory powder into the Flask. DO NOT USE TAP WATER. Only use high-quality filtered/distilled/spring water! Fill the Flask to around the 500mL mark with the high-quality water. Leave some space at the top. Do not overfill the Erlenmeyer Flask. 500mL is 16.9 fl oz (oh yeah baby). This is the size of a large drink and should be easy to consume in a single session. Seal the flask by tightenimg the cap onto the Erlenmeyer Flask opening.

Your Advanced CWE Extraction System is now ready for use.

Turn on the magnetic stirring on your magnetic stir plate and leave on a slow speed. Make sure the stir bar is spinning properly on the bottom of the flask. Turn off the magnetic stirring if the stir bar is not spinning properly and reposition the flask-beaker on the plate to reset the stir bar. If your magnetic stir plate is also a hot plate, Do Not accidently turn on the heat! It is crucial that your extraction is kept cold at all times! Slowly turn up the RPMs for the magnetic stirrer to the maximum speed that the stir bar can handle. Leave the stirring feature on and monitor the extraction every 15-30 minutes to make sure the stir bar is still spinning and that the ice pieces in the Beaker have not completely melted.

Continue the chilled extraction for as many hours as you can. Recommended extraction time is 4-6 hours. A 9 hour extraction would likely be excellent. A 12-hour extraction would be even better! Use one of the long glass pipettes to remove cold water from the Beaker as the ice melts so more ice be can added as needed for extended extractions.

If you have trouble mixing the powder with the magnetic stir bar, you can manually mix the solution with your hands. Its best to do this when the ice has melted. First, remove the water from the beaker either using the pipette or by pouring it into a bowl or other empty, clean container. Remove the flask and tight the screw-cap lid. Using both hands, gently swirl and shake the seed powder-water mixture. Don't shake too hard or you will risk the flask slipping out of your hands and breaking. Be careful while handling the flask for this reason. Make sure not to shake the flask too long, put back on ice or in cold icy water every few minutes or so to prevent the water inside the flask from getting to room temp. Its critical that the water and seed powder in the flask are kept chilled at all times. Repeat this manual-mixing process as many times as you want, just make sure to cool the Flask down frequently using the ice bath.

If a magnetic stir plate is not used, you can manually mix the 500mL flask by hand. Take the sealed 500mL Erlenmeyer flask out of the 2 gallon plastic bucket filled with ice. Make sure the cap is tight on the flask. Hold the flask horizontally using both hands, one hand on the base and one hand on the cap. Move the flask back and forth in a reciprocating motion similar to how bartenders mix drinks using a cocktail mixer. After mixing for about a minute, place the flask back inside the 2 gallon ice bucket to rechill. Repeat this process for 4-12 hours, replacing melted ice water in the 2 gallon bucket with cold ice as needed. The more hours the flask is mixed with being chilled by ice, the better!

Once you have completed the extraction process, turn off the magnetic stirrer (if it was used). Take the Beaker/Flask combo off of the stir plate and place on top of the table.

Next step is filtering. Filtering the seed-chilled water mixture is a long, slow, multistep process so patience is key.

First, fill up the 2 gallon plastic bucket and the 5 Quart Mixing Bucket with cold ice. Next, you are going to make a filtering bucket using the 2.5 Quart mixing bucket. First, make sure the bucket has been cleaned and dried using filtered/distilled water and paper towels. Place a single piece of cheese cloth over the 2.5 Quart mixing bucket. Make a shallow "hammock" indention inside the 2.5 Quart mixing bucket. Use the pair of scissors to cut the cheese cloth to the right size. Next, use the 4 Heavy-Duty Mini-Spring Clips to secure the cheese cloth to the 2.5 Quart mixing bucket rim. Make sure to space each Mini-Spring Clip equally apart around the rim of the 1.5 gallon mixing bucket. Your 2.5 Quart mixing bucket is now ready for filtering. Take the sealable 500mL Erlenmeyer flask out of the 2 gallon bucket and place it inside the 5 Quart Mixing Bucket filled with ice. Next, place the 2.5 Quart mixing bucket inside the 2 gallon bucket filled with ice. Let the 2.5 Quart container chill on ice for about 5 minutes.

Once the 2.5 Quart mixing bucket has been chilled, pour in your mixture from the 500mL flask onto the cheese cloth "hammock" on the 2.5 Quart bucket to start the filtering process. The mixture first needs to filtered with just one layer of cheese cloth to prevent the cloth from clogging up. Collect the filtered liquid in the 1.5 gallon mixing bucket then transfer the liquid back to the Flask using the plastic funnel. Keep the heavy-duty spring clips and discard the used cheese cloth. Repeat the cheese cloth filtering process but with 2 layers of cheese cloth this time. Once that filtering is done, repeat the process again but with 3 layers of cheese cloth. Keep repeating this process until the mixture is almost completely filtered and easily passes thru the cheese cloth.

Once the mixture has been thoroughly filtered using just cheese cloth, the next step is to use coffee filters or lab filters.

Place an empty glass amber bottle or an empty 16 fl oz bottle into the 5 Quart bucket of ice. Next, place a clean, dry filter funnel into your glass amber bottle. Place coffee filters or lab filters inside the filter funnel. Pour a small amount of the water-mixture from your Amber glass bottle into the filter funnel. Wait for it to filter. This will take a long time. While you wait, place your amber glass bottle filled with unfiltered water-mixture back inside the beaker filled with ice. Its important that the water-seed powder mixture is kept chilled during the entire extraction process.

When the water-seed powder mixture has trouble filtering, replace the coffee filters/lab filters. Continue this process until all of the water-mixture is filtered. As mentioned before, make sure the bottle with the water-seed powder mixture is kept chilled on ice as well as the amber glass bottle filled the filtered LSA water extract.

Once the filtering process is complete, you have a few choices. One is to store the Advanced LSA CWE extract inside the amber glass jar. For this, seal the lid on the glass jar and put the jar into the fridge. I recommend drinking your extract about a week or less after creating the CWE extract.

The second choice is to drink the LSA CWE extract directly after filtering. I recommend adding Tang Powder, Kool-Aid powder or other beverage-flavoring powder/liquid to the amber glass bottle, replacing the cap then shaking it well. Adding the flavoring powder will improve the taste of the extract. Make sure to add any flavoring powder right before consuming the Advanced CWE extract. Enjoy the clean, potent trip.

So Im doing this method right now. Ive quickly realized that the stir bar/stir plate combo is not going to work: the MG seed powder settles on the bottom of the flask and prevents the stir bar from spinning. The stir bar jitters around but it does not stir the powder around.

Im thinking an Electric Stand Mixer would be a better device for this Tek. They are used to make dough but on a slow enough speed, they could work great for constantly and automatically mixing the cold water and MG seed powder mixture. The only downside is the ice bath: you cant practically put an ice bath around the metal bowl. One workaround could be stopping the Electric Mixer and putting it on an ice bath then once it chills down, go back to the mixer. This or adding small amounts of ice cubes to the extraction water.

Everything else in my Tek is working pretty well so far.

How are the clavine alkaloids being separated from the LSA?

I'm familiar with a CWE prep method where fresh fruit of Ipomoea species, which are not fully ripe, are mashed with a fork and then covered with water, just a bit and mixed for maybe 30 seconds to a minute and then the material is poured through a sieve to remove the seed material. Then it can be ingested, if that is the goal. Whole prep takes 5-10 minutes. Unripe fruits tend to be stronger than dried ripe fruits.

The version of this for dried material, like with Hawaiian baby woodrose, which is rarely available fresh, is to use a coffee grinder to grind the material more finely into a powder and then do a quick soak and shake as well. Alternatively the seeds can be soaked in water to germinate them or begin the germination process and they can then be treated a bit more like the fresh seeds and just mashed with a fork or something.

I'm kidding about removing the Clavine alkaloids.

I'd wager that LSA and LAH aren't responsible for the psychedelic effects of morning glory seeds, that clavines are. Without chromatography there is no way that any of the known extraction methods can actually separate the clavine alkaloids from their breakdown product lysergic acid. In fact, some studies show clavine alkaloids at their maximum before seeds are ripe and dry and that they decrease over time and lysergic acid increases, as their breakdown product. This results in a decrease in potency over time. It is widely reported by users that aged seeds are far less active than fresh. So, contrary to popular belief, the anecdotal evidence and the chemical data both indicate that the molecules responsible for psychedelic effect are the clavine alkaloids. Ergot fungi also produce clavine alkaloids, several of which, as mentioned, break down into lysergic acid over time. It is likely that Kykeon's psychedelic effects are due to the clavine alkaloids as well.

I'm not aware of anyone taking isolated Lysergic acid and getting off. As far as I know it is a sedative that makes people sleepy. Fresher seeds are much more stimulating and like most psychedelics they tend to interfere with sleep rather than promote it.

OK, its not that advanced :lol:

I wish I could selectivity choose which alkaloids were extracted from the seed powder, wouldnt that be nice!

I tried some of my extracted water last night, it worked! Subtle but no nausea, which is one of the worst parts of LSA/LAA and why many people don't bother with Morning Glory or HBWR. The secret is using lots of ice during the entire CWE extraction process.

My filtering process needs some work but has promise. I think Im going to do a single-layer cheese cloth filtering first, then do a two-layer cheese cloth afterwords, and continue with that then do use a coffee filter last. Finely-powdered Morning Glory seeds have a strong tendency to clog up filters, even multi-layered cheese cloth!

Agreed.

Cold water is highly effective.
The seeds contain purgative resins, the whole family does for the most part. One of the traditional uses for numerous members of it is to cause purging. Even Ipomoea tricolor has these resins to some degree. 

One of the methods of making the purgative medicine from various seeds is to use alcohol to extract first and then add water until the resins are no longer soluble and they crash out of solution. They aren't soluble in cold water. This allows the resin to be taken instead of the seeds. One can read more about this by searching for info on the use of Pharbitis Semen, which is the old term used for seeds of Ipomoea nil.

Some of the members of this family are actually dangerous, Merremia tuberosa was used as a purgative medicine, for example, and fatalities have occurred from ingestion of excess material. Pooping yourself to death is not a pleasant way to go, to say the least. Lucky for us none of the known psychoactive species are able to do this.

It makes perfect sense that a cold water extraction would produce good effects and little to no nausea. Tradition, chemistry and anecdotal evidence all support that.

Logical Chaos, similar to problem you found with the seed mush, I've extracted into a couple shots of wine at least 2 dozen times, the wine captures all the alkaloids, and zero emulsion, whereas extractions with water never have worked for me, always a giant emulsion that never separates.

Note: (for instructions below with pics) never try to extract your seeds using just plain acidified water, I have tried this before, your seed debris will not separate out in the fridge, and you end up with a complete emulsion in the coffee wire filter which will not filter at all, wine is needed to effect the proper extraction, and allows the liquid to separate from the seed emulsion below, this will not happen with a plane water extration. This is how the ancient Aztec and Mayan extracted the seeds using balche, an alcohol they made themselves, see 2nd pic.

Nillion, I agree with you that all the clavines in the seeds are psychoative, in fact in my thread " how to make lsi" go down to post 3 and I list the study that showed the alkaloids chanoclavine, agroclavine,elymoclavine, and lysergol in the seeds were found to be just as stimulating as lsd when administered to animals, I also give a chart in post 1 from Poland study which shows the relative amounts of them in the seeds, similar to your older chart which I have seen as well. It is combined teamwork of lsh and the various clavines that give the experience imho. Lsa has been found to be a decomposition product of lsh over time,as fresh seeds were found to have the most lsh from vendor, while seeds sitting on retail racks had the least lsh due to environmental factors such as heat causing the lsh to decompose.

Yet another reason to extract with acidic water such as wine or water acidfied with lemon juice or DL tartaric acid, as most of these very stimulating clavines are only very slightly soluble in plain water:

"Penniclavine and Agroclavine are readily soluble in organic acids, penniclavine and agroclavine are stable to acids", wine stands as one of the sources of organic acids. Page 33 "Elymoclavine is only somewhat soluble in water". Peter Webster states in "Sacred Mushrooms of the Goddess, the Secrets of Eleusis" in the morning glory chapter that Chanoclavine is soluble in alcohol.

From the 1957 paper "Extraction and Identification of Clavine and Lysergic acid alkaloids from morning glory":

All members of the excitor group produced in all test animals a syndrome of central sympathetic excitation and elicited a stimulation of spontaneous activity. In this group, elymoclavine was the most potent stimulant and next come agroclavine, triseclavine, penniclavine, and LSD which are almost equipotent, as judged by the degree of symptoms exhibited in the same dose. The arousal effect of elymoclavine or agroclavine on reserpine-sedation was superior to that of LSD.

Animal experiments have shown that penniclavine, elymoclavine, lysergol, LSD and several other ergot alkaloids such as agroclavine, triseclavine, and lysergene have excitory effects on the central nervous system (Note 1: Yui & Takeo, 1957) as well as lysergic acid hydroxyethylamide (LSH) which also excites the central nervous system in animals (Note 2: Glasser, 1961).

There is also an interesting on-line interview with the LSD chemist Bear Owsley where he hits on a derivative of LSD that the ancients may have discovered and prepared for the Eleusis mystery quoted here:

Owsley: Claviceps paspali ergot, same alkaloid profile as morning glory contains many natural, highly psychedelic alkaloids. Iso-ergine is one of them, Lysergic acid hydroxyethylamide or LSH is another one, and in fact, is considered nearly identical to LSD in effect. Albert Hoffman told me so himself. They believe that it was this derivative contained in extracts of c.paspali which grows on certain grass that was used in the Eleusian Mysteries.
